Yeast starter infected?
« on: May 01, 2013, 07:09:34 PM »

Made this yesterday evening. Been sloshing it around a good bit and let it sit for about half an hour and noticed the white on the surface. Smells ok. Its washed WLP005 in about 500ml of wort

Yeah - I've seen this before on a few white labs yeast starters of mine. Just gave the starter bottle I was using a good shake to mix it all up and it disappeared. Used it in my brew and no problems. Don't know why it happened or what it was - But all was good.

Hard to tell. Looks a bit stagnant. I'd err on side of caution with a starter. Rather waste 500ml of starter than a 20L batch of beer. Can you make another starter?

I got something like that on top of a conditioning beer once. It turned out it was yeast attached to C02 bubbles.
