Homebrew Tasting at W J Kavanaghs

The inaugural Capital Brewers beer tasting took place in W J Kavanagh’s on Dorset Street on Wednesday last. Despite the snow, freezing conditions and a few cancellations there were 8 brewers present with the fruits of their labour. The conversation was all beer and brewing and everyone gave their honest opinion on every beer going which gave the brewers some honest feedback. The standard was high and very slanted towards Belgian styles, possibly with the upcoming Bay Brewery competition in mind.

Cathalbrua showed off his tasty first stab at a Saision using wlp568, which is a Belgian Ale & Saison blend. Marceldesailly impressed with a really hoppy red which was hopped with Sorachi Ace. He also brought big  pale ale dry hopped to within an inch of it’s life using more hops than most would use in 5 brews! CaraEire brought a hacked kit primed with honey that was more than lively and had us running for buckets! Ronan used the same grain bill to showcase different hops in a pale ale – Citra and Apollo and an all Calyso pale ale. Two very drinkable Belgian Triples were served by Cathal and Kev and the evening was rounded off by two big roasty beers from Rossa, a 7.5%  porter and an American Stout that was brewed at the TOG brewday in December.

The possibilities of how to brew for the barrel projects were discussed with Kev offering his expert advise, being a veteran of two barrel projects to date. It is hoped the conversation will continue on the forum and at the next meetup, a brewday in TOG on April 14th.

As always there were some quality beers on cask in Kavanaghs and it was a pleasure to experience the best cask cellarmanship in the city.  W J Kavanaghs are happy to have us back next month on Tuesday 30th of April. We hope to continue the tasting on the last Tuesday of every month into the future with the Brewday on the 2 Sunday of the month.
