Hey everyone,
What are people's thoughts on using OXY cleaners for cleaning carboys?
Ive acquired 2 pressure barrels that need a really good clean by one of them has a 2" neck and it's impossible to get in there to give it a good scrub. (phrasing)
OXY will clean them. but don't leave it in too long a hour or so and rinse. Thurles (midlands temporary hard) water will cause a scaling on the tide line of left too long. Oxy will definitely soften the crud
It is also temperature dependent. It work best at around 40C.
T'is slippy stuff when it gets on the outside of the container so be careful when you try lifting ;)
What's the logic behind not leaving Oxy too long? Just wondering because I often leave my stuff soaking in Oxy for days.

I'm sure there is science behind it. I left a Carboy too long with OXy and a hard water scale formed particularly at the surface of the water tide line. I had to do an acid wash to remove.

Had similar experience
Cheers lads, picked up a box from eurogiant for €4. No dyes or fragrance.

Cheers Damian, was planning on leaving it over night until I saw this.
Youl will get a bleach migration into the resin with long term exposure.
30 Min soak 60 degree wash should shift everything.
If it doesn't empty and repeat.

Would it be OK for stainless? Have my stainless fermenter soaking right now and won't be home until Sunday. To be honest I always soak my kettle and fermenter for days..
I have a chlorine taint in a pressure barrel how can I get rid of it???
Soak with water and SS. How did it get there in the first place? Stored for long term.? That will come into your beer as it's in the vessel now
No plastic container should be exposed to chemicals more than 24 hours unless it's your long term storage vessel.
Even starsan "rots" the plunger and mister in spray bottles.
I must have left it soaking for too long! But any amount of soaking in water hasn't got rid so far!
Might just have to chuck so ☹️
Was thinking that! Grasping at straws!!!!!

Soak with water and SS.
So it's ok to leave Oxy on SS for prolonged periods? I have Oxy sitting in some cornies awhile now.
I know on stainless for oxy it's different and you are ok , I don't store any chemicals in my cornies especially SSan as I had small amount of pitting in a very old one I managed to scrub out, although manufacturers would say thats impossible

In hard water areas you may get mineral deposits but will come off with conc SS.
Not great for aluminium
Bleach should not be left in prolonged contact with stainless
Vwp should not have long contact time either.
Sure there is a wiki somewhere about cleaning or read a post recently as to what is and isn't suitable.
Emphasis on all of the above is short soak to clean and make up your starsan fresh for optimum effectiveness.

you could try some campden in it but personally Id chuck
The OXY clean I got worked perfectly. 30min at around 45c and the kingkeg is sparkling inside. Now just to get a new cap, pressure float and tap. Tempted to get a sparkler tap off amazon as I can't find them here at home.
Anyone here find that wiki on cleaning of equipment? I had a quick look in wiki section and did not see any specific post about cleaning. I will chance using W5 oxy on a mash tun with a fairly weak concentration to try and remove some dirt and stains on inside of it and for cleaning an immersion worth chiller and keggles based on the information posted here
I could be misremembering this but I don't think you're supposed to use Oxy on copper (if thats what your IC is made of).

Any truth in this? I've been flushing my counterflow with oxy.

+1 on the starsan.I've left some hose's soaking and has turned them opaque and leaves them with a slimy feel.
