NO WAY! ;D

I think as the norm the numbers will be capped at 60 to be manageable on the day! But if the interest is huge, well us at South Kildare will re assess and handle it 😀🍻
Let the brewing commence!

With his beautiful shirts that he likes to wear he would bring a bit of class and glamour to the event. :-*
7 13's in a row is not what judges want to judge🤢
I'm sure his feedback was top drawer he's the kid in the exam that asks for more paper
Speaking to both judges on the day and they said that the standard was very poor.
This was one of the reasons that we decided to host a lager competition. It should give all those that entered the nationals a chance to use the judges feedback to improve their beer and try again.
I was asking more from a Rossa point of view.
Like another bloke I heard of who's never judging a Red Ale comp ever again. :-\

Crikey! How many pale lagers were there? Sounds like I did
relatively well, although I was amazed by the stuff he picked out that took me an effort to pick out even with the scoresheet in front of me. Invaluable and very thought provoking.
Was planning a rebrew using the feedback anyway, so this would be a brilliant opportunity to check progress.

Get brewing!
I'm surprised to see kolsch and altbier in the style line up. Neither are typically fermented with bottom fermenting yeast. Seems like a shame to include them if the objective is to encourage better lager brewing.

The competition is there to encourage better lager brewing but we also wanted to open it up to brewers that don't have the cold storage or temp control that lagering requires hence the kolsch/Altbier styles.
The selection is great. Now just to decide what to do

OK OK, I hear what you're saying. We will review and either leave it as it currently is or get rid of altbier/kolsch etc. There is still 6 months to the comp.
Ah no, it's your competition. Do what works. My main objective is to (hopefully) dial in the brew I entered in the nationals. Might have another try at an altbier me self.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I think it would be nice to reserve this to bottom fermented lagers only. The whole appeal is the technical challenge of lager brewing. If a fantastic Cali common or Kolsch was entered and ended up winning it would be an awful pity. All in my opinion of course.
I know there was a little bit of a lack of medals for the lagers at the nationals, how did the alts, Cal Commons and kolschs do?
The kolsch, alt and BP were judged together and produced a silver, gold and bronze respectively. No idea about CC.
To be fair alt and kolsch are supposed to be lagered.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Issue is that Kolschs Alt Cal C are "easier" to do and not as technically challenging.
As others have said it's your comp.
Hi all,
After much thought and consideration we have decided to remove the following from this competition ... 5B. Kölsch, 19B. California Common, 7B. Altbier.
The reason we are holding this competition is to challenge Irish brewers to brew award winning lagers.
We understand the challenges involved in producing a lager during the warmer summer months but hope that we get a lot of quality entries to the comp.
Apologies to all you Kolsch brewers.
Mick

Theres a lot on Brulosophy about brewing with saflager strains at ale temps. Could be worth a try for people who cannot hit lager fermentation temps.
Hi all,

Just giving another bump there lads and lassies, hoping we will get enough support to be able to warrant running this competition :) :)
Hoping to have two for ye fairly soon.
Just entered one there. I hope you guys get enough entries.
I will have one too
I have a few experiments on so waiting to see how they all work out before putting anymore in.:)
I have two possible entries that are now a week into fermentation. I'll know in a few weeks if they are good enough for entry, hopefully i'll be able to enter at least one anyway.
How many entries do you need to make it a runner?
Added two there that sure of possibly more 8)
Great stuff thanks for the support :)
To be honest I feel we need at least 50 entries to make it worthwhile. You all know what goes into making a competition run. Plus we are taking up a space in the pub on a weekend day. So fingers crossed we now have 21 entries! :)
Lets do this! :) :)
Myself and few other people have beers made for the competition but as the style takes a long time to get right I think people are waiting till near the end to see if there beers are worth entering which doesn't help the club know how many are going to enter. Just my thoughts .....hope people enter now to make it happen 8)

Hey, just checking something about the entry form - no matter what style I select, it still tells me: This style requires that you provide specific information for entry. Instructions are below.
"Kellerbier" is the only one with a symbol beside it in the style dropdown though, so I guess that's the only one that has any requirements, does that sound about right?
Cheers!

We have 45 entries for this competition. A pretty good turn out.
We are planning on following the same format as the Nationals where we will separate the entries into Pilsner/Pale Lager and Amber/Dark Lager.
I just want to say thanks to all that volunteered their time to get the entries to us (we still have some stragglers but most have been collected).
Good luck to all that entered.

Mick
Heya, I can see my entries but there's no button to download the scoresheet beside them. Any ideas?
There was a technical glitch. Hopefully sorted now.
Thank you! Well run competition again lads - well done all!
Wow, genuinely shocked and chuffed with the result. My thanks Kellie, Mick and all involved. Sorry that I couldn't join you today in Lock 13, but planning a visit soon. Cheers all. Jonathan

Well deserved win, it really was the class of the show. So to answer the age old question, was it quick or traditional lager method? :)
Cheers Molc. Traditional on this occasion. Brewed in May and has sat in the fridge ever since. Might leave it sit there until February after today's news ;)

Time is everything! Patience is needed with a traditional Lager

To echo Kellie... Your beer was undisputed by all 4 BOS judges. Fair play. A great beer! I'll be in touch to sort out your prizes.
Cheers for everyones efforts on the day. I would have been there as helper but had work.
So as we know the nationals did not have great lagers so how did this fair in general ? Will bren come out of homebrew retirement to show us how its done again !
Well done on your win JD
Well done lads.
37 & 40 in my first competition - delighted. Thanks to the organisers and judges.
