I'VE been using this for most brewing cleaning for the last few years but I was in lidl yesterday and could only find a perfumed oxy product. Anyone know if they are still carrying this (website is not informative) or have any recommendations for a good replacement general purpose brewing cleaner?
Lidl w5 big rinse afterwards and then whatever you use to sanitise
Sure, my issue is I was in lidl yesterday and it looks like w5 oxy has been replaced with something else which has either perfumes or optical brighteners (depending on the version you buy) neither of which sound like they belong in a brewing cleaner.

Nnooooooooo!
Poundand etc also stock an unperfumed oxy cleaner up north here. Maybe try Dealz and the like?
Thanks Irishgoat. They had stuff call Astonish in Dealz. 1.50 for 650g.

That's the one.
In sheer panic I tried the Belfast City Centre Lidl yesterday and they'd loads of the stuff.
I panic bought 2 tubs of it, just in case.

Dang it. This is worse than the recent water restrictions, or the fuel shortages of 2000. Inhuman, is what it is. Wonder what the reasoning behind replacing such a seemingly innocuous product is. Should I be stockpiling on Cien brand fabric softener? Silvercrest paper shredders? Diving gear? Solar-powered garden lights that don't work?
This country...

Looks like it's true....no W5 Oxy in Magherafelt, Ballymena or Antrim Lidl...I took the "scenic" route on the way home last night.
Barry, those two tubs will go for a fortune on the Oxy black market in a few years.
500, not a penny more
Sodium Percarbonate can be bought on ebay. I bought 25kg bag recently when I heard of the imminent demise w5 oxy. Worked out a good bit cheaper and I've enough cleaner for a while.

Exactly! The Lidl stuff is 30% sodium percarbonate, so adjust your dosage as required.

The replacement products appear to be the exact same as the "competing" offerings in Tesco and Aldi apart from the packaging, and probably came from the same source.
So, more "choice" from the multiples. >:(

Pardon my ignorance, but what constitutes the other 70%? The ingredients on the side of the tub don't exactly give much away.

Best plan would be to cut it with cheap detergent and sell it on the streets. I'm off to buy a few PAYG SIMs. Who's in?

Is it gone in all shops or just in Lidl?

It's a Lidl own brand version of OxiClean
It had no perfumes so was handy for brewing
Astonish Oxy Plus in Dealz is still available and is also cheap and not perfumed.
Anyone know if the formil oxy in Lidl that appears to be a replacement is usable
Shanna
It's not. It either has perfume or optical brighteners. Neither of which are good for beer.
I was looking at it yesterday and it looks the the same product. It's not perfumed and sure it has brighteners but so did W5 afaik.
I only have stainless and glass so gonna give it a go with a massive rinse out like I used to do with the w5 in any case.

What was the source for the percarbonate on ebay? The pricing is all over the shop, £39.99 for 5kg from one and £48 for 25kg from another seller.
Try https://mistralni.co.uk/products/sodium-percarbonate-ultra-pure
I buy from them all the time.

Lidl
When I checked both available (Formil Oxy action in red tub and Formil Oxy action White) had perfumes in [checked ingredients and also used my nose].
What one have you used?
I didn't do the sniff test Will I should have :-[
I'm losing the run of myself these days and only using PBW for stainless and VWP for glass

I think it cost me ~£60 on ebay. Cant find the link right now but aweisse link looks like decent value. It's sold for cleaning wooden decking etc in 25kg bags. I split my bag with a couple of guys and I'm fairly heavy handed with the stuff for all sorts of cleaning jobs anyway so big bag suited me.
Can you use that stuff on stainless
I was using oxy on my kegs and brew kit with no problems. Use this stuff same way and not had any issues.
I have just sent this to Lidl's customer service:
customer.services@lidl.ie (http://customer.services@lidl.ie)
Maybe a few more emails from us could get it re-stocked!
Its been a while since I contacted you re. the W5 Oxyclean that us homebrewers use.
Imagine our disapointment when we find you have taken it off the shelves to be replaced by the 2 Formil cleaners.
Unfortunately these are perfumed and so are unsuitable for cleaning our brewing equipment.
There are nearly 1500 homebrewers in Ireland that regularly went to Lidl to buy the Oxyclean. Whilst in the store we would naturally checkout your range of craft beers and special offers in the way of tools and equipment. We buy the vacuum packers, cool boxes, tools etc etc.
Can you please review the descision to take W5 Oxy off the shelves.
One more moan: You no longer stock the Red grape juice as we are also wine makers and your red juice made an excellent base for fruit wines (Guess where we buy the fruit!)
Will Davis, Malahide
I sent something similar to customer.services@lidl-ni.co.uk last week
Report back here if you get a response and I'll do likewise.
Just got this from Lidl.ie:
"Dear Mr. Davis,
Thank you taking the time to contact us with your suggestion to re stock w5 Oxyclean and the red grape juice .
I would like to let you know that I have sent this information onto our Purchasing Team as they are always delighted to hear from our customers with new suggestions such as this. We really appreciate your feedback and hopefully you might see this product in our stores in the near future.

Go will go. Go will go ;D
The reply from Lidl NI, not as upbeat.
Dear Mr Doherty,
I have looked into this query for you and I am very sorry to say that the Oxy Stain Remover is currently unavailable.
I cannot confirm at this point in time if or when this item will return to our stores, however I have passed your feedback on to our Purchasing team. I would like to thank you for your feedback and I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

I could only see Astonish Oxy Active in Dealz...
Anyone tried that? The lids were sealed so I couldn't have a sniff.
What about Mr. Price?
I'm looking to tune my cleaning regime and feel like these powders might be the answer. I want to give them a go before buying bulk.

I think that's the same stuff. It's the one I've used anyway and works a treat. Just be careful getting it on your skin if you have wet hands/arms. It'll start to get to work on them pretty quick.
So, I got some oxy active from dealz and it seems to have a faint smell to it.
I haven't used it yet. Might check Mr Price today....
Has anyone used perfumed stuff and just rinsed the hell out of it after?
It smells pretty faint, but I don't know what the non-perfumed smells like to be able to compare...
Mr Price has this stuff.....
Any thoughts?
Works well. Just rinse the bejaysus out of it with hot water.

Saw this stuff in Dunnes no optical brighteners or perfume mentioned. I might pick it up next time, and it it's not suitable I'm sure I'll find another use for it.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181121/1dfe1b4a94ca5ac27757efcb2f2d1265.jpg)

Saw that in Dunnes the other day as well. The barcode doesn't work on the site listed at the bottom the label though, so I chickened out. :'(
Anyone more knowledgeable have any thoughts? It looks promising.
Someone on the HBF UK put me onto this - https://www.bmstores.co.uk/products/astonish-oxy-active-plus-2kg-340423
Not sure how it compares in price to the W5 stuff but it seems like decent value. Got some at the weekend and cleaned my keg and FV with it. I had no idea my FV was that manky until I used it. Whoops.
Data sheet suggests that there is no aroma (perfume)
https://www.astonishcleaners.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/SDS-Oxy-Active-Plus-Super-Concentrated-Fabric-Stain-Remover-F1V3.pdf
Even better value in Dealz at €1.50
https://www.dealz.ie/astonish-oxy-active-stain-removal-650g
But you're only getting 650 grams. Are there no B&M outlets in the Free State?

I got a tub of the Dunnes' stuff. Definitely perfumed.

I got Astonish in a dealz type sttore in Letterkenny. Its non perfumed and great, but not as obviously reactive in terms of oxidation as the old W5 OXy.
Yep, I've been using that as well.

That's unfortunate about the perfume, you would think theyd have to list it. I'll try out that astonish stuff. And sorry for the massive photo size, I forget to resize them when posting from Tapatalk.

Whats the size of your vessels and what ratio did you use?
Well the fella that originally put me onto it said he uses 1 scoop per 2 litres of warm water. And 2 scoops per 2 litres if you really need to shift something that's caked on.
I have 2 x 5 litre plastic FV's and 2 x 19 litre corny kegs.
You obviously don't need to fill either of these types of vessels to the brim with water. I used 2 scoops and about 4 litres of hot water when cleaning my keg. Because of the design of the keg, it acts like a thermos, so the water stays warm for hours. I was faffing around doing other stuff so the stuff had hours to work its magic. But in reality, you could clean the keg properly in about 10 minutes.
resurrecting this thread in case anyone interested. Mr. .Price now doing an oxy called astonish 2Kg for 4.99. Seems pretty good
