Yes I love it, mainly fly fishing these days but love to get out on Sea when I can too.
What kind of fishing are you into?

I grew up with coarse fishing as well, spent many a day on the Shannon - my dad used to drop me in Banagher in his way to work and pick me up after.  Perch and eels were the main target them days, it doesn't seem to be near as good now.
I just started fly fishing a few years ago but it's my preferred method now, it's frustrating at the start but once you get the hang of it its very enjoyable.  Fly-tying is almost a hobby in itself too, it's hard to beat the feeling of catching a fish on a fly you tied yourself.

There's good trout and salmon fishing about these parts, but i've been kept too busy to do any this year.
Anyway, if I pay for salmon fishing in he blackwater all the money gets shipped back to Lord Candlish's purse...

I used to do lots of sea fishing, it's about 5 years now since I did it weekly. It was really easy when I lived in Ringsend.

I have a stack of gear at home, a few grands worth of bits and pieces.

My best night was a night in Greystones where I had 9 seperate species over the night.

I used to primarily fish on overnight sessions, and the rougher the weather the more I liked it, hipflask in me pocket and all was good.

My best expedition was a bit of opportunistic fishing in Cootehall (Roscommon). My aunt was going to collect something there and she dropped me off at the bridge. I pulled out a 4lb trout, a 4lb pike and a 7lb pike, all in the space of 20 mins! The 7lb pike had recently eaten a ~0.5 lb trout which was still intact inside, except for the fins which had been digested.

My brother is very heavy into fishing down that neck of the woods, he has a fishing boat that he takes out from where the barge is in Carrick. He does ghille for people down there too, knows all the lakes and spots, takes it very seriously altogether. I'm not so into coarse myself, the whole catch and release buzz is a bit of a cod to be honest, I'm more of a fish eater than a pure sports fisherman.

I keep the good ones, and let back the ones that won't be eaten.

Although I gather now you can't keep much, e.g. all pike have to go back.

Not all pike, you can keep them up to 40CM and males as far as I know. You are not allowed to take the hens at all.

I like to eat a nice pike, if they didn't have those damned Y bones they're one of the tastiest fish out there.

The Germans love the Pike and will try to take them home with them in their camper vans. My sister in law lives in Hillstreet Co Leitrim approx 8 miles from Carrick, they have 2 lakes on their land that have Pike Perch and such,no Trout as the lake bed is muddy and not suited for Trout. Great fishing in it as it does not get too many fisherman. :)

East Europeans eat pike too. It's only Irish really that won't generally speaking. I think even the odd English lad will eat them.

I remember the old Irish lads would have eaten them, most of them dead now though.

The English lads who come over for fishing trips have the same attitudes as the Irish fisherman, its the German and other East Europeans that can have different attitudes that can cause agro. My sister in laws husband has had a few run ins with them and has had to run them off his land. One time I remember an Italian man came on to the land with a gun and aimed it at the swans living on one of the crannóg's (man made islands). He was walked to the road which meant he had a long walk to get back to his camp. ;D

I remember my father telling me his neighbour used to go fishing on the Shannon with a shot gun. He had a grudge against pike, as he reckoned they'd eaten all the trout out of it. So he used to bait an area with potato (it'd be maggots nowadays) and when the fish started to appear in any numbers he'd start letting rip with the shot gun.

Lucky he didn't meet my brother then, he'd have a canary and would have wardens on him in a flash, he probably knows all the large pike down there by name ;)

My old man reckoned that firing a shotgun at fish in water was like trying to shoot at clouds...

The shockwave though might be enough to shock them and float them.

I know a guy who used to fly fish alot, had all the gear including the clothes, looked like an extra from the film where John Wayne knocked the ballix out of Walter mc'Clackin(the quiet man). One day while fishing in Wicklow a bus load of tourists stopped on the bridge up the river from him to take pictures and of course trying to show off his skills, hooked the tree behind him. never wanting to upset the tourist trade he pretended it did not happen and kept casting and swishing away till the fpokin bastards got back on the bus. ;D

hahaha Fair play to the ambassador! Speaking of The Quiet Man, we used to holiday in Cong every year where it was filmed and fished quite alot on the Corrib on an ickle little rowing boat. The camp site we stayed on showed the film every night in a little mini cinema also so i pretty much know the feckin thing inside out!
"He'll regret it till his dying day, if ever he lives that long." was a favourite

Last time I went out on a boat I spent most of the trip chucking up, and we caught nothing on the day either. That was out of Wexford.

Cannot understand how you did not catch anything,I have gone fishing with pukkers before and we caught lots, they must have had a better class of puke. ;D

Yeah one would expect the chumming to help, alas it did not. I think there was one dogfish hooked, but that was all.

For any of you going in chartered boat fishing trips. The key to preventing seasickness is to take a travel sickness tablet the night before and one first thing in the morning. The active ingredient takes several hours to metabolise. The mistake most people make us taking the tablet just before they go out. Even if you are good in a boat it is a different thing to be anchored in choppy water. Take the drugs and enjoy the trip  :D

True - chris - A guy in my job gets travel sick (even in a car!!) and says he has to make sure he takes the tablet well before travelling for it to work...

On fishing - Ive done some salmon fishing on the balckwater with the father in law - he's part of a syndicate there, hes mad for it! But rarely catches anything - I like the idea of fishing but its the whole not catching anything aspect that annoys me.

My new house is a 2 minute walk from the sea - I am determined to make use of it, even if its just going out in an ould dinghy now n again - I'll definitely be trying some sea fishing there at least once in the not too distant future. I know nothing about it though.

I find with sea fishing that I got good enough to never have a blank when I went out.
It's a combination of the right bait, fresh peeler crab is the killer bait when seafishing.
Using a combination of rods, I use one close in scratching rod with a three hook flapper using small hooks and one long range rod with a large crab/squid/razorclam bait on it wrapped up in thread on a large pennel hook and cast out 100M or so for the larger fishies.
Also the timing of the trip is vital, I'm a big fan of overnight sessions that way I'd fish through low and high tide.

I only go into pubs with really low urinals...

Are there restrictions on when you can fish in the sea? Do you have to go 9out on a boat? I assume not - i've seen lads at my place doing it off the shore. Would ya catch much like that?

That is my buzz, I set up on shore mostly.

The only restrictions are on seatrout and on Bass, you can check the regulations, otherwise no restrictions.

I have caught up to about 35 fish in a night session in Greystones, on the North beach where the stream hits the water. The mix of sweet water and sea water is a great spot for the fish.

you need a lot of gear to do it right and to overnight, but it's good fun.

The photos below are from a rock fishing trip to Cork and show some of the gear that is useful for shore fishing.

A selection of fish, wrasse, dogfish, rockling and a conger eel.

I haven't posted there in a good while but it's very possible that you are correct.
