Photo of the class will appear on the BJCP website. Anyone have any issues with their name being included in the annotation?
Well Done Tube.
I would love to do that when the next round starts
You may put me down for a re-sit!
Aye, unless a miracle happens +1 for me
BTW: What about September?
RDS beer gig:
Very good chance Ali and the Welsh guys will be over (I know they want to come to the RDS).
Also by then we should have Scott (Poland (and Liffey Valley honoury judge)) available as a National!
Worth registering at least ??
Oh and btw - next time lets have some beers that fit the BJCP recomendations ::)
As in there was no 45 and no 13!!

There was a 45 and a 13! Didn't you spot them :P
Of course
I did. Plus a few other peeps!!
Pity that Ali and Gordon ( Inexperienced if you ask me O0 ) didn't
Does that mean there's likely to be a tasting exam here in September?
Er post #2, I don't know what your drinking but could we all have some ;)
Oops, I guess I didn't go far back enough in the recent posts :-[.
Fair play anyway.
Well, I spotted the 13, and scored it so - pity Gordo gave it a 28 or something :-[
I think he scored it 22. A bit generous?
I had 2 x 13's until I realised my off Belgian was the Brown ale. :o
Thankfully there was a spare glass of Belgian and I got a few minutes to redo it.
As part of my role as International Coordinator for the BJCP, I've set up a UK and Ireland BJCP group on Facebook. The idea is that it will provide a broad forum for discussion within judges and those planning on taking the exam.
You can find it here - https://www.facebook.com/groups/445603758903154/445621018901428/?comment_id=445624402234423¬if_t=group_comment (https://www.facebook.com/groups/445603758903154/445621018901428/?comment_id=445624402234423¬if_t=group_comment)
Excellent News.
Many Thanks Ali.
So not being very FB literate:
I follow the link and click on Join Group and then wait for a welcome from you?
Have just registered the NCB comp and received the organiser pack!
Gues what: One of the spread sheets is "Provisional Judges" and we are all there. So at least something has happened in the BJCP re. The exam
They said 2-3 months for the results, didn't they? Which should mean we hear in the next couple of weeks. But I'm not holding my breath ... ;)
As one vulture said to his wife "Patience my arse I am going to go and kill something"
It has now been 25 weeks since we sat the exam and not a dicky bird from the BJCP!
Can they at least acknowledgee that they are processing our results?
Sitting in a resturant in Manchester, service was a bit slow, but after 30 or 40 mins noticed that people comming in after us were getting served food. Called over the waiter who then returned sheepishly to inform us our order had got lost!
Result: 10 mins later free meal.
Never assume that your order has got all the way through a system!
Have we a contact in BJCP land?

Would any of the BJCP class of 2014 like to judge at the IPA Fest competition in Galway on Sat 25th Oct? Would be great to have some of you. Pm me if you think you can make it. Thanks.
I received BJCP result this AM.
I'm not sure what triggered this but I had received an email reminding to do the paperwork for the Monochrome comp.
I replied saying that some judges were awaiting results. 24 hours later I get results.
14 judges on the books in Ireland now
How many sat the exam?

Me also- what rank did you get (Apprentice here...)
Recognised
Some of my points are there, not all....
yep got my login...no stewarding points on my list just 2 judging points...how do we get them fixed?
Recognised
All my recent points are there, none from the 2013 competition although I wasn't expecting them to show up in fairness. Is it 5 points facilitates the jump to Certified ?

I already am technically. I'm just missing the points on the system to confirm it ;)
congrats ;)
is it just half point for stewarding?
also anyone answer re 2014 nationals I judged all day in cork and stewarded all day in dublin. I didnt receive steward points, is this because its down as one comp when it was actually 2 comps over 2 days....
anyone confirm?
Well done everyone. Nice to finally KNOW! Pity the leaving certs have stolen the thunder a bit this week. However, I'm now a recognised beer judge, and everyone shall hear about it.
I'd better start getting out there and earning some points, so! I'll raise a toast to the class tonight.

Ye rossa I agree Its registered as 1 comp, but does bjcp award per day or per registered comp? The uk nationals in bristol are split over 2 days and 2 venues as well
The way it works is for a certain amount of entries you get to award a certain amount of points. The amount of days really didn't matter as it is sessions that count. The system won't allow you to give someone more points than they are allotted. But you are able to retrieve points retrospectively. All that has nothing to do with a competition organiser and has to be done through the BJCP.
A half point for stewarding is right I think but again all that info is on the BJCP site.
(That is off the top of my head btw!)
Been on here http://www.bjcp.org/docs/First_Time_Judge_Packet.pdf and its fried my head. Does not make sense reeally. Why we not given 1.5 points for judging when the numbers were 50-100 or 2 points for judging when the entries are 200-300 and so on.
Anyways Ive asked Ali to clarify ( just mailed him) his bristol uk nationals are same scenario ( two venues on two different days, one comp) hopefully he can clarify.
In my situ I commuted to Dublin, then commuted to Cork at significant expense (70 euros in taxi home from dub, 70 euros b&B cork) and seems unjust not to be given points for my work in cork just because its "one" comp....surely that cant be the case given that judges pick up points for "each session" e.g points for morning and points for evening
Woo Hoo
Recognised!!
Congrats to all!!!
stewards 0.5 points per day max 1 per comp
judges 0.5 per session: min 1 per comp, max 1.5 per day
BOS 0.5 point (1 if you have not judged anything else)
so 2 for the 2014 comp seems right. I got the same
i have 6 points over 4 comps (7 if you include the missing 2013 nationals) kicking myself i did not get a higher score

ahh beerfly...u have to practice more....and harder...all then points as well..
so u got that 2 points for the 2014 nationals..does not explain my 1 point...hence my point :)
welldone to everyone who put in an effor regardless of results on paper...its all about promoting the hobby, after all thats what its all about ;)
I got 2 points for the nationals too.
So you have all managed to login with the supplied Id and pwd?
I tried and it said "Fail wrong user/pwd" ?
[Edit] Tried again and all OK
Have 3 judging points so far! ( 2 Nats + Liffey V)
I will certainly be up to retaking the exam!
Ah Will, the abacus doesn't know how to connect to the internet. You need to upgrade!
Ali just clarified for us.
if u judged in round one of the nationals and stewarded in round 2 you get points in both....even though its the same competition...
"A mix of points is allowed - you should get .5 stewarding points and 1 judging point for the two days in Dublin and Cork. Whoever was the organiser (Shane? Rossa?) needs to have inputted this into the reporting when they did it, or will need to correct it with the BJCP
In bristol the two centres are less than 5 minute walk so he said its is deemed the same venue.."
are you owed points? We only have one round.
There seems a grey area re points for split comps, but if we take Mr BJCP Ali quote above he confirms that steward and judge points can be allocated for a split comp in some cases and has confirmed our 2014 nationals, so I prob should have 1.5 for Irish nationals not 1 as is on my record. Some people got 2 points because you can get BOS bonus as well.
Anyways wont be long getting to 10 points and head for the next exam :)
Just checked my mails. Recognized :) Only comp Ive judged is the monochrome one so I guess Il get some points for that eventually? Delighted to have passed. Thanks Padraig & Tube for making it possible & for letting me in on the siebel taster day.
The Monochrome one is a delinquent. Get John to sort that out.
Just working it out, I think I should have 2.5 points for the nationals.
.5 points per session of which I did more than one each day. 1.5 max per day.
.5 for BOS
I would think that would equate to 2.5 points for the two days no? Are we doing the session reporting right? Or am I reading it wrong?
SESSION
An uninterrupted time period when at least one panel of judges sits to judge one or more flights of entries. Typically, "morning", "afternoon" and "evening" are considered sessions at most competitions.
Seeing as ye all have your rankings now are any of ye interested in judging at the IPA fest in Galway in Oct? Cant offer ye anything in the way of compensation for travel but ye'll be fed & it promises to be a great day/night out.
I might, what's the date? I think I'm currently free the whole month, although I probably can't make the bank holiday weekend.
Pity. Its on the bank holiday weekend Sat 25th Oct.
Doh... I don't actually have anything on, I'm just on call that weekend.
Congrats all!
It took those results an age to come out!
I hope a few of ye got 80%+ and will try to get up to National level... It would be great to have our own pool of proctors!
Very happy that we have so many qualified judges on the books now!

So we had 3 sessions and a bos for you. At .5 for each that is 2 points. The system has a drop down menu for awarding points and will not let someone award more than the max that is there. I'm not sure if you can earn 2 per day tbh but I guess with a third session and a bos you could but then it says a max of 1.5 as well....I'm rambling.. There is no extra points for mini bos AFAIK. No option to award them anyway.
Ah, that's grand then. Once the pepper points are applied it will all be square.

So Kevin does this mean the boss is gonna give you a raise. Congrats by the way. Not everyone knows you schooled the Porterhouse lads in everything they know about beer. ;)

Nice one lads.
I assume people have got their documentation in the post? I found the feedback on my judging comments quite useful.
Yep, shiny badge an' all! The feedback was a little embarrassing at times, but I needed to hear it. Going to constructively appraise a few beers tonight:
"...you apparently had issues with scoring some of the styles presented, [...] practice tasting (the fun part!) and scoring beers will certainly help."
Who am I to argue with the BJCP?
Yeah some of the feedback was a little embarrassing, especially for someone who writes about beer. The main thing I took away from it is that my scoring is a little off compared to the proctors but I picked up most of what they did. A few times I picked up things they didn't. In one case I perceived a beer as completely flat. They didn't but since I was the far end of the room to them, chances are it was flat by the time I got it. That's not something anyone, beer judge or not can mistake. Coke is flat or not, simple.
I got 75 and I was hoping for 80 but good enough.
I seem to have made a balls of the weisse beer. I really liked it but what I liked was not to style so my scoring accuracy was way off. Compared to the brown ale where I was master level and 1 point off the proctors.
Considering the 6 month wait for the results when an envelope arrived addressed to Me, ... Dublin, IE the misses wanted to know "What the fekk have you ordered now!"
I was totally at a loss until I opened it!
The written comments show how seriously the exam is judged and reviewed - helps explain the delays.
Very valuable comments!
When are we resitting the tasting exam?
I'd like to congratulate all BJCPers worldwide on not selling their old badges on the bay. Very honourable.
Great feedback, comprehensive and constructive criticism of our judging. Myself and kellie done exceptionally well kellie gettin master on two beers (fect dat ibetter buck up) and i guessed on the day we all balls up the weissbier. Really professional outfit bjcp based on the quality of my feedback and admin....worth waitin for is all i can say with a level of detailed feedback they need to be commended on
On a quick glance I was averaging recognised but feedback and scoring accuracy was what let me down. Great feedback on the exam scoring. I even got a hand written note of encouragement for been close
I am convinced I am only in by the skin of my teeth.
That last beer really shagged me
I had the Nut Brown 'off' instead of the belgian, but spotted this and thankfully got to do the right beer, but the experience unhinged me.
A definite way to improve is to brew more, taste more and score regularly.
HB meets should kick off with 'work' first - pissup after.
I am trying to get a Siebel Kit which should feature at an event soon.
I like the way they tell you what to study - but I'm surprised it's Palmer's How to Brew .

This book is a combination of about 4 other books written by some of the world's foremost experts on malt, yeast, and brewing science. The technical detail it goes into is great for commercial brewers but a complete waste of time for homebrewers. A degree in microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering is almost necessary for comprehension. I love this book for the technical aspects of the brewing process it explains. Beware that it does not give a step by step for solving problems, the practical brewer is better for that.
A+ overall!

this one tells the truth about beer and how fantastic it is for health when the beer demonisers and put to one side while we are then allowed assess the pros and cons of beer reading proper scientific debate on the subject.
The above is such an unbiased review of beer in health AND disease literature
