Guinness is making two new beers – and here's what they'll look like

I didn't mind the pale ale, I'll try these too. Wonder if the West Indies porter will be like foreign export?
This is going to be hilarious. Fiver says they both taste like Guinness.

True true you old cynic you ;)
Talking about Boortmalt and Guinness malting on TV3 now.
Bottle labels are pretty cool though, to be fair
Label's are good but then that's what Guinness are really good at :)

Supposed to be very similar from what I've read.Haven't seen it anywhere.Morrisons supermarket is the only place I've heard it being sold in.
I've tried them both. I guess you couldn't expect Guinness to branch out too much. Both were nice but I definitely preferred the West indies one. The Dublin porter was a bit plain.
had a cupple of bottles of the west indies porter last night , im not a guinness drinker i will add so dont be trying to get me deported from cork, but in fairness its pretty nice. 6 0/0 hoppy for a guinness product so in all i was surprised.
I also saw these in SV last night and skipped the 3.8% and bought the 6% West indies and some O'hara stout for reference. I didn't find the WI that hoppy but it was the first thing the missus picked up on but I thought it was really molassey and about as sweet as you'd tolerate. Funny as I was thinking about knocking up a coffee/biscuity stout and went to SV looking for inspiration and the WI one is alright, I'd drink it again, no head and mouthfeel's lame and a bit too fizzy. Also quite similar to the Foreign extra in some ways. Jesus it hurts paying those prices though ...
Been seeing ads up north for these beers for well over a month now but still no sign of the beer anywhere. I'll give them a go but wouldn't be arsed paying too much for a bottle.
The Beer Nut has a good write-up on the series as well. http://thebeernut.blogspot.co.uk/2014/11/whatever-people-say-i-am-thats-what-im.html
Picked up some of the Dublin Porter in Centra, just to give it a try.
It was fairly light bodied, very little head or head retention, no lacing on the glass, light on taste too with a slight burnt malt aftertaste. At 3.6% it's an easy drinker - almost a 'session Guinness', although at over 3 euro a bottle (500ml) it could be a very short session :)
how much are you being charged for the west indies porter ? its €2.50 in the offie in clonakilty.........
Quotehow much are you being charged for the west indies porter ? its €2.50 in the offie in clonakilty.........
Not a bad price, just looked it up in O'Briens offie and the West Indies porter is €3.29 - now that's what I call a 'craft beer tax' ... ouch!!!
€1.26 of extra profit in someones pocket , this notion of a craft beer tax is bollix .......it doesnt help the brewers and it is off putting as a customer to feel ripped off , good import beer being cheeper than irish craft beer is not going to help grow the market for irish beer .
not that im overly worried about guinness, they have had it too good for too long, but the likes of mountain man , blacks ect who have outstanding beers that could be overlooked based on price .
Blacks is on offer for 4 for €9 in Dunnes if you're looking for it.
i got 12 blacks black ipa , and a selection of british beers and a few dunkels ......all 4 for €9 , good for stocking up for the festive season......
The missus was going to Dunnes. Did they have any Blacks? Did they me arse >:(
i hope it wasnt in clonakilty.......if so i am sorry...
I had a pint of the Dublin Porter in The Oak, It was on tap so I obviously had to have one. It came with it's own fancy glass, kind of like a Stella Artois glass. Overall I found it to be quite a disappointing experience; the beer was lacking in flavour, very light on body, minimal head and just a bit shit for a stout. And at around €6 (could have been less or more, had a few already but remember I wasn't happy with the price for two) I won't be having another! Poor effort Guinness IMHO!
Aye it's very poor. Plain Guinness is a more tasty due to the lovely mouthfeel whereas this gives the hunt of possible more flavour with everything else being pretty weak.
Supping the West indies porter at the moment... It's really nice O0
Is there lactose in it?
West Indies porter is €2.80 in Molloys Ballyfermot, a lot more palletable than 3.30 in Supervalue/O'Briens, I wonder if Tesco/Dunnes will stock it? I think it's a fairly decent drop
No sign of it in Galway when I checked Dunnes and Supervalu. Just on the blog post, beer nut mentions a Guinness 'essence', where can I read a bit more about that?
[Edit] Actually E3.30 there in Supervalu, Fr. Griffin Rd. in Galway. I won't bother with it at that price.
Picked them up in my local SuperValu at the weekend.
The Dublin one is very weak and tasteless. The WI one, not much better.
Certainly wouldn't have either of them again.
The Dublin Porter i had on draught in town a couple of weeks ago. It was quite light tasting for a Porter but i'd probably have it again. Wouldn't bother me arse for €3 a bottle though

Winemark on Clooney Terrace have this IR...2 quid a bottle.I haven't found it anywhere else.Prefer the West Indies one.
Jacks Bar in Derry have it on draught but it tasted like it had line cleaner in it. Had the same problem with the Shandon Stout in there (which Dublin Porter has replaced).

Probably because the barman that was told to put cleaner in the line when the Shandon was on tap is away on holidays and his sidekick is carrying on the practice because the Diageo rep has not told him to stop ;)

Didn't know that.Must get a call in for a pint for 3.

I'd nearly drive to Lucan just for that.
tried the hophouse 13 last night, not bad at all.
Was taken on a jolly yesterday by diagio to the storehouse and their new brewhouse 4(or willie wonka world! their words 180m brewhouse), all to push their new line the Hophouse 13 lager .While there got talking to its creater and new poster boy Alan simpson heres what i gleaned
Hophouse 13 - 4.1 abv 18 Ibu mostly pale malt with a little light crystal double hopped (their words)with galaxy, topaz and mosaic (bittering and flameout)
fermented with their guinness yeast at its lowest possible tempreture
then lagered .
Had a tasting session guinness ,west indies porter, blond ale, pale ale, carlsberg and hophouse 13 a couple of tours ,lunch ,then a free bar (hophouse or dublin porter only)for half an hour bussed home a free feed and a couple of free hop house rounded off the day ,all in all a good day out even if i think the beers a bit middle of the road .
Are you one of their new brand ambassadors?
Tried the west indies today. First thought - funny to see a Giniz beer actually branded as porter. Second thought - is that a big bang of diacetyl? Definitely diacetyl. Not necessarily bad diaecetyl, more like the St Peters cream stout diacetyl (god be with the day when that seemed overpriced >:(). I'd still prefer FES and plenty else but it's not shite either.

I definitely prefer FES, the west indies porter just seems is just a dumbed down version of it. Both have diacetyl as part of the profile and its one of the few styles where it works. It wouldn't be an FES without it, although I've noticed the BJCP seem to think otherwise :-\
If they really wanted to get crafty they should release their Belgian Fes over here, thats an amazing beer, its 8%, biscuity, smokey and smooth as f00k!
I've a bottle of FES - I'd never really got the diacetyl off it the way I got it off the porter, but I must try it again.
+1 one on Belgian Guinness, it's lovely stuff.
Anyone know where the Belgium FES can be ordered from?
I've seen it in the Abbot ale house in Cork sometimes.
I see your in Derry so this might be a more practical option.
http://www.belgianbeerz.com/search?type=product&q=guinness
I ordered some stuff from here and while it wouldn't be a cheap option the service and selection was pretty good. They even have Hercule stout which is a really nice Belgian stout.
Revisited the Guinness porters tonight and i really like the West Indies Porter.
It's nothing special but certainly one of the best beers to come out of Guinness' foray into the 'craft beer' market.
It's got plenty on the nose - burnt toast and molasses.
Flavor's pretty good too - more burnt stuff (toast, toffee, fry fruit). a bit too carbonated and a little thin. mild bitterness.
Even though the flavor's nothing to write home about, what you get through the nose really compliments and enhances the flavor.
head is thick on pouring (about 2 fingers), but dissipating quickly with slight lacing throughout.
And for the non-beer-nerds:
Smells nice. Tastes ok. probably crap if you have a cold 'cos the smell and taste work together to combat the fizz.
Bonus content:
I blocked my nose and had a sup. Tasted nothing but the bitterness. unblocked and it all made sense again. like the whole apple/onion thing.

Spotted Guinness XX in can and bottle in Tesco. I was already laden with beers so didn't pick ant up.
Is this just regular Guinness?
Tried the XX the other night. It's not regular guinness. For one it's carbonated (no widget). More watery mouthfeel made up for by what I guess is a fair bit of brown ale. Not wonderful, but really not bad. Definitely a bit in the direction of the old brown-malt-heavy historical porters. On the other hand, if you like brown malt, just wait for the McGargles brown ale to come out. (Or brew Pattinson's 1804 Barclay Perkins porter.)
Isn't XX just the new packaging for Guinness Extra Stout (i.e. the non-nitrogenated version of regular Guinness).
Hmm, maybe it is and I've been overanalyzing it! But then I don't know GES too well anyway.
The one I'm talking about was labelled "Guinness Original XX" and "Brewer's source 1821", a phrase I can't really attribute any other meaning to than "historical recipe". But if they're trying to pass off GES as "what you would have been drinking in 1821", then their lousy marketing trick worked on me. Once.

Nitro IPA. 44 IBUs. That's barely even a pale ale...
Seems like it'll only be available in the states.

:o
Wow, that picture is proof that craft beer is spooking the big boys - when Guinness are naming hop varieties (and good hop varieties!) on their products!
Though, I don't know why you'd want an IPA served with nitrogen, which kills the aroma in beer. I don't even like nitro stouts for that reason.
I'd be very interested in tasting it all the same, pity it's not going to be available here. Though I've a feeling my reaction might be the same as when I tasted Smithwicks Pale Ale.. "where's the hops??"

Their version of dry hopping, you wave the fresh hops over the boil kettle and chant :D

I'd say they counted the cones out individually! ;D

I'm flying over to the States tomorrow. I would say I'll try some but that's a waste of good drinking time!!
If you see zombie dust on your travels, bring home a bottle or two for a meet. Dying to try that stuff first hand.
Dry stout yeast in a Nitrogenated IPA - I'd be interested in giving that a whirl!
For anyone interested, the Open Gate Brewery https://www.guinnessopengate.com/ (https://www.guinnessopengate.com/) have the Nitro IPA on tap. It's pretty nice. Unusual to have a creamy head on an IPA. Although I tend to be a bit like Homer when I'm rating beers I haven't tried before... ;)
