Hi folks.
Nothing planned as yet, but Rossa suggested I start a thread to gauge interest in doing another BJCP course and exam in 2015.
Take a look at what's involved here:

Something like this... (All rough)
Decide the style and subcategory examples that are available/you want to cover.
Aiming for 3 categories or so per session means 7 sessions – Say 12 tasters per session.
Assuming all 500ml (some will differ) – 1 x 500ml should cover 4 persons.
Cost = E4 (average) per 500ml x 12 (per session) x 7 (sessions) / 4 persons = E84 ea.

In the exam you are not judging beers! You are trying to match the proctors numbers!
Illogical I know but its the reality of statistics.
Agreed but a fair bit of your score is calculated from how closely you match their scores (20% iirc)!

Lets get two shipped together. We need one for the Galway bjcp nights. I can get them shipped to friends of mine in San Francisco & they can strip the package of customs stuff so we can avoid the charges.
There is a company in Dublin that might do them. I'll have a poke around.

Looking to do the exam as I have to get above 70 to get to the next level. I have enough points but you need a combination of score in the exam and points to progress.
QuoteYour rank is determined by both your exam score and your experience points. A judge with any passing score and fewer than 5 experience points receives the rank of Recognized. Judges with a score of 70 or above on the exam and who have accumulated at least 5 experience points receive the Certified rank. A score of 80 or above combined with 20 experience points provides the rank of National. Judges achieve Master status by scoring 90 or better and acquiring 40 experience points. In all cases, at least half the experience points for a given rank must come from judging.

Hey guys
while we sort things out here, we should decide what frequency we want to keep.
If we aim to complete in time for the October exam, once a month is probably too low, but every week might be a little bit aggressive.
I've put a doodle up: http://doodle.com/msta5pp54avfpyri VOTE VOTE VOTE! :)
I'd like to mirror the Dublin course in Galway for anyone in the west lookin to take the exam.

Sorry to be the one to ask the stupid question here ( :P), but what actually happens, and where? And why is frequency important?

Valid question.
There are lots of beer styles.
23-ish categories averaging 3 sub cateories - 69 beers roughly
It takes 20 mins to get the most from any 1 beer. (and this depends entirely on the beer)
You could do it in a day but you'd be leaving in an ambulance.
Are you that dedicated? O0

I'll ping the various speakers to ensure they are still up for giving a class.

In Google Docs 100 people can make a balls of it.
I've cleaned up the sequence so that it matches the original requests.
So, this is one helluva interest list.
Who is organising?
There are 2 pieces
Tasting - at however many venues
Exam - in one venue more than likely in The Pale
Id like to run the tasting/study group in Galway. But if the limit is already reached for the exam only part then there isnt much point. Id like to re-sit my exam this year also.
I'm on that - Basically where we are ..
We are organising 6 sessions over the summer - roughly one every two weeks with a gap here and there
We wont taste every style, but target a few and concentrate on getting good scoresheets filled out.
There will be an exam tasting at the end of each class, in which will use exam scoresheets and conditions.
Roughly starting end of may - rolling to end of august.
These sessions will start with an off-tasting. Then there will be 5 sessions where 6 beers are evaluated per session.
We are going to pick 8 weekends and two will be voted out by the majority.
Depending on numbers we might run an additional off-tasting at the end for those who dont make the first one.
The price per session is roughly 15 euro for members and 18 euro for non-members.
This will cover the price of the beer/ tasting kits.
You dont need to attend every session, you pay for what you can attend, but the off-tasting is strongly advisable.
There is an additional price for the exam - but for the moment we are just going to take a deposit from the people going on the course. People on the course are guarenteed a seat for the exam.
BJCP in the UK have kindly offered to assist with the proctoring of the exam.
We are currently targetting mid to the end of september.
The current Venue is The Black Sheep. We have teachers for 5 of the 6 classes
I will confirm prices and get a date list going once I have spoken to all the helpers and people giving the classes.
Also - I will liase with The HopBomb and JohnRM for Cork and Galway - see if we can get the same classes run roughly the same all over the country.
Anyways - thats where we are at !
Sorry - just to add - we will try to cater for as many as we can with the exam. I appreciate a lot of people want to sit it.

Hi Patridge,
Any idea yet as to what time of day this would be held at or how roughly how long each session would take? Would be interested to attend but as free time is at a premium it would depend on the timing?

I see the finalised set of guidelines are now published. http://www.bjcp.org/
We need to decide (and check with BJCP) if this exam will be to old or new style guide!
Also for our competitions when are WE going to adopt the new guidlines?
The BJCP website states that the new guidelines will be in use from November, so if we plan an exam in September, it will likely be done with the 2008 ones?
Exactly,
we were probably more like the end of september / start of october for the exam with the way the timetable was working out.
I'm just onto Ali in the UK, I'll keep you posted here.

Thats Grand Tom - no problems at all.
We are trying to get the new exam sorted. Looking for a date mid November.
I'll keep you posted.
We might be one of the first on the new guidelines !
From a general point of view, I think going with the new guidelines would be a sensible idea: what's the point of studying and preparing on a set of guidelines that are "out of date" the very same day we take the exam?

From a general point of view, I think going with the new guidelines would be a sensible idea: what's the point of studying and preparing on a set of guidelines that are "out of date" the very same day we take the exam?
Because you can't just throw a switch in the proctor's head's/palette's that says "Now you are qualified to proctor the new guidline beer styles"
Its a subtle thing judging beers! The basic qualification is that you can judge to a style. The latest guides have thrown up a large number of new styles and also some styles have subtle changes! It is not an easy job for a judge to change.
Also remember that before you can sit the tasting exam you need to pass the online exam!
Is this ready yet? Will it be ready by November?
For the BJCP a set of guidlines is one thing but a re-jigged, calibrated on-line exam is another matter!
Not saying it's not the case :) from a very selfish point of view, though, if we could manage to have the exam on the new guidelines, that would mean that we avoid the following "re-base" step. If that's not possible, then well, what's the issue :)
If I'm not too late to put my name down for this, been out of the loop for a while, otherwise I accept it's "first up best dressed". (I have also filled in the "doodle") :-[

Any idea when the dates will be finalised so I can lock these down in my calendar?
Yeap -
We will wrap it up now - we are over subscribed by 2 but we will work it out.
In fairness, people have had plenty of time to respond to the doodle.

I wasn't able to make a few classes when we did it and I'm sure it'll be the same for others this time around but getting to some of them would still stand you in good stead.
I didnt do any of them last year. Just did the sensory morning & mock tasting exam. Home study!
Folks we are wrapping up this doodle now
Our class dates are ..
01 - 20/06/2015
02 - 04/07/2015
03 - 22/08/2015
04 - 29/08/2015
05 - 12/09/2015
06 - 19/09/2015
Everyone can attend on the 12 September - so we might aim for a sensory tasting / mock exam for that one.
We are still working on the exam, we have our proctors but need to get it published with the BJCP in the US now.
If you like the look of the dates above and you have not signed up - we could possibly squeeze one or two more in but PM me ASAP.
Next step, The teachers will have a chat about the new guidelines and discuss the layout and the course material for each class.
We would like to add two parts to each class - one is a technical session, explaining some aspects of brewing and the influence it has on beer
and the other is getting some of the higher scorers from the exam last year, to have a quick chat with you about how best to fill in the scoresheet and maximise your exam score.
Of course that depends on peoples availability.
James
Found this study guide (http://www.bjcp.org/docs/BJCP_Study_Guide.pdf) on the BJCP website
Worth a gander.
We are getting all the relevant course materials into one google drive so people can access it easily.
First class is 20th June, looking forward to it !
Folks,
Some people are adding dates to their original choices
feel free to change the days of your classes, best done before you make payment !
Regards
James
Guys / Ladies
There is still one or two spots on this course if anyone is interested.
Starts in two weeks.
I think Christina from the Dublin ladies wants in. I think she said she was in contact with someone but I don't see her on the list.
Really looking forward to this :)
Is there any prep we can do before the first class other than reading http://www.bjcp.org/study.php ?
Can someone stick the course dates into the NHC calendar please?

Folks
I have updated the spreadsheet with the payments, I am missing a couple, if you are listed as not paid and you have done so, please send me a PM.
There is a shed load of payments at the moment and I may well have missed it !!
If have changed your mind or something - please let me know as I need to ensure I have the correct volume of beer for the first class.
If anyone wants to attend this class - we probably have room for a couple more.
For members its basically
6 classes - 90.74
5 classes - 75.74
4 classes - 60.74
3 classes - 45.74
Dates
01 - 20/06/2015

Very interested. May not be able to attend the first date. would it be possible to attend from then on?
Thanks.
Yeap of course, no worries at all
very few of the attendees are available for all the dates.
If you want to attend 5 classes - its €75.74 for members - simply pay using paypal to ...
bjcp@nationalhomebrewclub.ie
Is there money owed for exam only yet?
Not yet, we are still finalising that. We'll keep you posted ;-)
Ok folks
Kick off is 12 noon for the black sheep on Saturday. If you could get there a few minutes early, that would be good, so we can start on time.
Andy, the regional manager has kindly offered us a beer and a burger for a tenner, for refreshment after, this offer is only available to the course participants
All you need to bring with you is a pencil ! The course has been priced to simply buy the beer for the tasting on the day.
The new guidelines are available for BJCP or here (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9fs48qiqecxOHkyak5taldBS0E/view?usp=sharing)
We are going to be starting with categories 18B / 19C / 21A and maybe one more. These are pretty straightforward categories with the focus more around the sheets and preparing people correctly.
For those in the 'exam only' category - we are in the process of getting our date confirmed and once this is ready we will get back here.
Looking forward to it
James
Sorry this may have been asked before but how long does each session last roughly?
We are looking at around 2 hours , but we will have a better idea after the first class !
Guys this course if completely full now.
Sorry, no more spots :(
Guys and Ladies,
We begin our classes Saturday. Rossa is taking lead on this first class on Pale Ales and IPAs, however the styles themselves will be taking a back seat and much of the emphasis will be on identifying flavours in beer, converting that onto paper, giving homebrewers feedback and getting exam tips and trick from those who scored well.
Hopefully you will find it rewarding.
For those who are listed in the original list for the 'exam only', we havent forgot. We have applied to BJCP and reserved exam facilitators, so fingered crossed. Any updates I'll post as soon as we get them.
James
Really looking forward to Saturday guys. Thanks for putting it all together. Is there anything we need to bring along?
1 class in, fantastic!A big thanks to the lads for organizing the training etc.
Cheers
If anyone is interested Brad Smith from BeerSmith has a podcast on the new BJCP 2015 guidelines. He interviews Gordon Strong who we talked about in the first class about the new guidelines and there is some information on the format of the BJCP exam.
Heres the link:

Hi Guys,
Is there any places available for these BJCP courses?
Rgds,
Derek.
Derek,
We are one class in, its going great
We are a little packed for the remainder of the classes, if you are interested - I'll have a quick chat with the course facilitators and see if they mind, but unfortunately we are well over subscribed for the exam.
So I suppose, that leads to the question, are you still interested in the course if you cant sit the exam ? we can only offer the mock exam.
Can anybody help me out with the name of the homework beer?
Hi Partridge, thanks for the reply. I suppose I would prefer to do course and exam. I could wait until the next round, if there is to be a next round of courses? Ideally I would like to get certified. What are the chances of courses and exams being put on again within the next 6 months?
Rgds,
Derek
Modus hopirandi

Thanks
James
Where can I find any info about future courses ??
We will aim to run it on an annual basis.
It will probably be September 2016 for the next one.
Cheers James :) I have to set reminder :D
Belgians at 12 this Saturday is it? I cant make it once again :( Maja might not either but if she is it will only be for the 1st hour
Class 3: Belgians
Another great one guys; thanks to Rossa, Andrew & Shane for their time & knowledge.
Was a great day and thanks again to all.
Just checking about next week. Do we need to get tickets for the rds to be able to take part?
Just a heads up to all our current students who are looking for the BJCP Online Practise Exam- It's a little hidden:
You go here: https://secure.coursewebs.com/bjcp/Default.aspx (https://secure.coursewebs.com/bjcp/Default.aspx)
Add BJCP Practice Exam Questions (BJCP_Practice_English) to your cart. It is the 5th item down. Ignore the "Call For Pricing".
Then click on Checkout at the top of the page.
In checkout, select I do not have an account with BJCP.
Fill in your details, and click on Submit
You will either then be taken to your My Courses page; or you will be emailed a link to the My Courses page (I can't remember which).
From the My Courses page, just hit the launch button next to the practice course.
This is a 20 question tester with a 6 minute time limit so don't launch until you are ready to go.
Saturday 10th October here @maltcracker Kildare we will be having a tasting session discussion group on BJCP tasting / styles brewing and so on.
Its a great opportunity to come down for extra support from proven and experienced Brewers and Judges and perhaps a skilled Somellier will be present to help out as well.
Kellie and Myself would like to invite 2015 students to come down and enjoy a day of tasting, discussion and learning.
Fair play bren !!
forgot to re-iterate Kildare is 45 minutes on our direct green bus from westmorland street thats about the same time as the CIE bus to Clondalkin. By car its 25 minutes from red cow 22 mins Newlands X. Bus is 10 euros return and is every 30 minutes
We may even have a masterclass on hops as it will be hop harvest time as well! So if you have not been to @maltcracker's base yet then you are seriously missing out if beer is your passion...theres no place better to learn ;)
Sounds great to me !!
Damn that sounds like a great day out.
Sounds fantastic, cheers Bren
Would anyone like to get a whatsapp group going? Starting to get serious about studying for November about would be useful to be able to drop questions and discuss approaches.
+1 for the whatsapp group
Btw: I'm having troubles paying for the online exam... I'm getting transactions denied... anyone else having the same issue?
PM your numbers and we'll get the party started :)
People will kill me for spamming the group - can someone confirm if we will be doing both the written exam and tasting or just the latter?
Just the tasting.
From http://www.bjcp.org/membergd.php:
"Judges wishing to advance to ranks beyond Certified must take the BJCP Beer Judge Written Proficiency Examination, a 90 minute written examination."

We actually had a chat about that a month ago. I presumed it had started. Is it on the go yet?
Folks , just to clarify, we are just scheduled for the tasting exam , not the written.
You need to score 70 per cent in the tasting to qualify for the written.
Also it can take months to get the tasting results back !!!
Did the online exam before work this morning and passed! 200 questions in an hour really keeps you in your toes.
Did it yesterday evening... yeah, time is critical and the exam is long...
From experience, it can take a number (ahem) of times to get through this.
Time is critical.
Do not be disheartened if you do not get it first time around!
Take a break and go again.

Yes it certainly is :)
Thats a really generous offer folks
I am away at the footy in Poland so cant make but I really think this is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge.
Bren gave me a run down on what he is planning, and understanding body, dryness, finish, texture, this sort of stuff is invaluable for the exam.
Hopefully we can squeeze it into next years course as well, if ye'll have us.
On the exam - if you havent got am email and you were on the list - please send me an PM. We might have a free slot depending.

As the exam is just around the corner I dug out this old post about scroring beer in the exam:
http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/index.php/topic,5670.msg71857.html#msg71857 (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/index.php/topic,5670.msg71857.html#msg71857)
[With a few updates]
Subtitle: Lessons Learned!
I have just been crunching some numbers and it is obvious that to do well on the numerical scoring you need to match the judges score as closely as possible and not just score the beer as you would in a competion.
For example the really good beer should score 44 or 45 so is that what you would score it?
No way as the chances of a judge awarding MORE than you are remote to say the least. They are more likely to mark the beer lower say they mark 38. You mark 44. The difference is 6
If you marked it down to say 42 then the difference would be 4 (National level) If they marked higher then they could go to 46 and the diff would still be 4!
For the really good beers ( in your opinion ) then this approach should help
The same logic applies at the bottom end!
As regards the first beer [A Fullers ESB iirc!]: I fell into the same trap on the online-exam:
Qn: "Category 8 A, B, C cannot be obtained in bottles in the US" True or False
I naturally put down false but its true!
It states in the guide that the style notes apply to the cask/keg versions. These are hard to find in the US in cask / kegs and the stuff the brewers bottle is NOT the same beer! Its brewed to a higher abv with no regard to other critical factors like IBU! So therefore in our exam it was bottled and therefore not to style! Sneaky eh!
One final note: If I had scored all beers as 29 or 32 the average diff would be 4, If 30 or 31 would be 3.666
Its easy enough to do with excel!
Folks, I should probably know this at this stage. For the tasting exam do you have a copy of the style guides? I checked on the BJCP website but didnt find the answer. Cheers.
No, it's a closed book exam. I don't agree with this approach, but this is how the exam is done :)

Great day out, good to meet up with some new faces (and old ones).
Many thanks again must go to James for pulling this together.
Also to the 'Dock for hosting us and I must say the burger/pint deal made up for the smell of new paint!
Note to self: Must Drink more neer but in a structured writing it down sort of way!
Best thing of the day: Listening to other peoples way of describing the flavours and aromas. Worth every penny :)
See you all next Sunday!

Really showed up my gaps, very much have to improve my descriptive vocabulary & brewer feedback.
Thanks to all there.
I was a last minute entrant to today's affair.

Good man James for organising!
Great day and well organised! Thanks for all the work that goes into organising it. The cramming starts now!! A lot of beers to score before next weekend!!
