Hello!

Homebrew newbie here! I had intentions of starting homebrewing last summer - collected bottles etc - but put it off in the end due to lack of space. The upcoming minimum alcohol pricing legislation has annoyed me so much that I reckon the best way to deal with it is not to buy any at all - just make the bloody stuff myself!

Background: I've been drinking craft beers (or, as I used to call them, "foreign beers") for a long time - pushing 20 years at this stage (in Rumplestiltskins in Cork for anyone that remembers it). I'll drink pretty much anything ( :P), but keep coming back to the Belgians, weissbiers, stouts (especially imperials) and ciders. Have kinda gone off IPAs the last while TBH. The last few years I've been drinking more wine (esp French red) than beer and would hope to do some homebrew wine at some stage, although might stick to doing whites as I'm not sure the effort is rewarded with red kits. I'm also a microbiologist (and have access to full lab facilities) so probably should have taken up home brewing a long time ago!

I've got my first ever homebrew already on - a turbo cider - which I'll do a report on for the Cider forum; it's nearly ready for bottling now and is, frankly, drinkable already! Plan is to do maybe another couple of 'experimental' turbo ciders to hit upon the 'right formula' for a large batch for summer 2016. Or maybe I'll just do a cider kit, I'm not sure! My first 'full size' brew will the legendary 'Ditch stout' variant of Cooper's Stout, followed by a Craft Range Wheat beer. Have both of the kits already. Main issue will be space - I'm in the process of purloining a kitchen cupboard for my brews but will only get one fermenter in there; other locations are difficult due to having two small children around the place! No plans to move to extract or AG - just don't have the space really. Although you never know....

That's it! Hopefully I'll be able to contribute positively around here!

Welcome! I'm also in Cork and can tell a similar story to yourself (sans microbiology)..

Hopefully see you at a brewday with the local club

I remember Rumplestiltskins, used to be quite the rocking spot! Welcome aboard.

Welcome, what recipe do you use for your turbo cider,  I use the one by Khannie on boards, I think he's on here as well, I've   made it exactly like his recipe and the last time I added some demerara sugar to give it an extra punch.

I was more of a jack plugs man myself ;)

Yes, based it on Khannie's recipe. I've made a thread detailing it so far on the Cider forum - http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,9104.0.html

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

Jack Plugs - feck. I remember I had my 17th birthday in there, was already a regular.. Get in there before the bouncer started and you were sorted! Pint of Murphys and a cheap Black Russian (mainly coke) chaser

Where was Jack plugs? The name rings a bell, but can't picture it.

It was a spot for young'uns. When I turned 17 in there I thought I was getting a bit old for the place...

Went in there by mistake once. Not good, fat frogs were very popular.
