Welding thin stainless

I have a couple of those german stockpots with 1/2 holes drilled for a tap and a thermometer. Its a total pain getting them to seal up. The pots are very thin. Has anyone managed to weld fittings to these?

rukkus

yep welding a 1/2" socket on would do the job for both the thermometer and the tap. I'm using a 1/4 bsp right angle for the sight glass

rukkus

I basically wasted today trying to seal them up when ideally they have welded sockets anyway

Ned

Should have said, you have to cut a bit out to fit around seal.

rukkus

Is that similar to the silicon backing sheets? i cut up lots of those today

rukkus

Cool, my main concern is that the stainless is very thin so it could be a pain. If you could PM me an idea of cost when you know a bit more that'd be awesome. We could have met in Simons alright. I'm @davidconde on twitter.

rukkus

I think I already have all 4 sockets. If it was possible to also weld in the 1/4" for the sight glass it'd be really cool but its not a biggie as i have that sealing i think. I see you are putting together an all grain kit yourself. You are more than welcome to pop over when I'm brewing some time.

rukkus

Prob like 1mm or something silly :/

Really hoping to have her maiden brew next weekend

rukkus

Sorted, thanks a million for that

I see the tell tale signs of too much heat being used for the thickness of the metal but at least a good color on the welds.

The pots are very thin alright

Did you weld them yourself - If so excellent job!
Remember: The Nationals are just round the corner - time to get brewing

rukkus

Nope a friend of mrmeindl very kindly did them for me
