So I was making my entry to the Smithwicks competition today. But, I managed to screw up one important ingredient: Chocolate Malt, so now my winter ale looks like a chocolate stout!

Here's the recipe. I was supposed to add 91g of chocolate malt, but i added 500g! Anyone any idea what this might turn out like, and if I can still enter it into the competition?

4kg Maris Otter
500g Chocolate Malt
20g admiral 60min
10g admiral 20min
20g williamette 5min
100g wheat malt
150g crystal malt
200g special B
300g honey

US-05

Dry hop williamette 20g
Spice Tea (Cinammon, Ginger, Vanilla Bean, Orange Peel.

It's probably totally screwed now!

Apparently they don't want a stout so that might be a problem.  Sure just call it a Porter. They'll be none the wiser 😉

500g could make it too roasty and astringent. You'll find out in a few weeks ;)
Fermenting: IPA, Lambic, Mead
Conditioning: Lambic, Cider, RIS, Ole Ale, Saison
On Tap: IPA, Helles, Best Bitter

It should be a good roasty porter. I think with the vanilla plus the special B and crystal it could be quite nice.

I'm gonna drive Diageo into liquidation if this 6 grain beast gets through
Only 200g of chocolate any more and it's a woodbine.

Having said that FWH were pitiful i measured them twice just to be sure, pimple and elephant comes to mind and I don't ever remember using so few for bittering

They'll be delighted at the hop frugality

Always felt that the amarillo hop addition in their pale ale was a wave a cone over the boil kettle then tie a string to it and give it a dip or two.  :D

found a few chocolate stout recipes on beer smith using over 450g in a 5 gal batch with 4/5 stars, so there's hope yet!

I'm sure it will taste alright but it's gonna be dark :(

Chocolate malt varies a lot. I only use the really pale stuff now that I've gotten through my 25kg of fawcett dark chocolate malt. Ugh!

Aah yes I remember it well. At Liffey meet ups you would offer it and when someone says I'll take 500 grams you would say your getting 2 kilos :D
