Stuck one of these in the fermenter on Sunday evening.

Tin of Coopers goo
1.5KG light DME boiled in 4 litres of water, 10 minute boil with 35 gms EKG pellets.
250 gm of Crystal steeped at 68 for half an hour
Topped up to 23 Litres
Coopers Kit yeast

OG read a little low at about 1.034 but I took it while the temperature was still around 30.  Would probably expect it to be closer to 1.042?
It was bubbling away happily by yesterday afternoon.

Hopefully it will be good for Christmas.

Sorry man but is that "1.5KG light DME" or one .5kg as the OG seems very low if you added 1.5kg of DME .Have you tried your hydrometer in regular water round 20c ?

Did a milk stout with the coopers Irish stout kit this time last week .
I added .

.5kg light DME .
.25kg Chateau Crystal & WeyermannCarapils malt .Both steeped at 65c for 90min .
.3kg of lactose .
.2kg of decent brown sugar .

OG came out round 1041/42ish .I assume the lactose & brown sugar would add a little to the OG .But nowhere like an extra kg of DME .

This may help you figure out roughly where your OG should be V your hydrometer readings .I`d test your hydrometer as well ,esp if it is the plastic type . I think i seen something about them leaking . so it may have taken on a little water while you were sanatizing it .

Anyway let me know how it turns out, should be a nice enough drop  :)

Hi Pepin,

it was definitely 1.5kg of DME.

maybe it all clumped up into balls reducing the reading.  I had a little taste from the fermenter last week and it was coming along nicely.  going to leave it there till the end of this week and try it again then.

cheers

Right so, a quick update on this brew.

Delicious drop.  I don't usually drink stout / Guinness / etc.  I brewed this for my Dad fro Christmas because I tasted a version of it at a GCB meet.

I'll be doing it again also.
