I recently picked up the peco BIAB upgrade kit from Get`er Brewed .Plan is to do some small batches ,so i can get more styles of brews in .And with any luck learn something along the way .

I need a little help working out the numbers for say 12ltrs bottled . 3kg of grain should be plenty for a decent ABV in small batch size .3kg of grain will soak up roughly 0.6ish of the total grain used right ? so that`s an extra 1.8ltrs or so of water to begin with . And say another ltr od in the bottom of the fermenter .

But how much will be lost during a 60min boil ? I`v seen some numbers saying around 3.2ish ltrs per hr. I assume its going to depend a lot on surface area & volume ,maybe also og in some cases.Smaller batches will boil of more % wise than larger one.there being a higher surface area to volume?

I plan on using hop socks to save a bit on cleaning, but also to reduce the loss between the boiler and fermenting vessel .It`s not likely to save much, but then I`m not making much either so cant hurt.

So for 12ltrs end volume, I`d need to start with roughly (very roughly ) near the 18-19ltr mark ? I`m not overly worried as things can always be adjusted a little ,with a slightly longer boil or adding pre boiled water . But any advice is very welcome .

My first few brews will also be very basic smash brews . pick a grain pick a hop sorted . So I`m not looking to do anything fancy until i have a good idea of the numbers i can expect from an average brew day .Once lol if i get the basics down then I`l worry about actual recipes  .

Cheers .

I have a Peco boiler that I got earlier in the year. I've only used it few times so far so I'm still sorting out my numbers too, but yours look roughly in line with what I'm getting so far. I did appear to get a 4.5l/hr boil off rate on my last brew though.

Note that if your boiler has a temperature probe like mine then you will have to have enough liquid to cover it at all times it's running. This is about 12l in my case. Also it's a bit harder to control the mash temperature at smaller volumes.

My boiler doesn't have a false bottom - I've been using a stainless steel cheese grater! The one that comes with yours looks good though (and cheap)! I might get one...
