As some may know Getr er Brewed has offered the club 90 (10 x 100 gms x 9 varietys) bags of new hops to be distributed via the local groups.

I have requested 9 bags (ie. 1 of each)

Note these are pellets!
The full descriptions are here:

At the moment we need do no more but in future we will draw up a wish list and divvy out the hops. As usual they expect reviews!  Talk more at the Boro

Update:

Have requested the NCB bags and also mentioned MolC had asked for some so aked if they would include those

Also asked that if there were any spare bags guess who would like them?

Then had light bulb moment!

As they want reviews why not organise a competion based on the Smithwicks model:

Any malts/any yeast but ONLY these hops (singly or in combination if possible)  [edit:]

Primarily a NCB but why not let the rest in.

Possible Style could be a summer beer/lager
Venue: Spoons would love to have us I'm sure
Date: Sometime in early Summer

What do we all think?
BJCP: Yes but not neccessarily judged to their guidlines

Great idea. How will allocation work?

Pheeel

Didn't the lads in town have a lawnmower beer comp last year. If they run it again it might be in the same territory

But I'm up for something along these lines

Thanks Simon,

We will see what we get - if its just the 9 bags then lets just draw lots. If more than 9 want them then there are a few non winning tickets in the draw

If more then we could always split some into 50 gms and add in with the main 9 or have more winners.

Also the club could always buy some more paricularly of the bittering kind.

Maybe we need to consider hop pairings that might work well.

Lots to discuss at the next two meetings

Will make for some great meet-up!

Yes, yes and yes. I was planning a pilsner or check lager with mine, but a competition would be a great way to do it and also give something to geterbrewed.

I'm sure there is plenty of admiral hops out there we could use. Probably a lot of 100g bags with less then 5g missing out of them.

I like the idea of a small comp. Sure we see what we get and go from there.
We could do our own thing or open it up to other clubs we received the same hops.
Sort of a Get Er Brewed sponsored NCB comp?

Jacob

I like the idea but with just 100g each it might be difficult to run a competition using just those hops.
Let's say that I would like to brew a nice pale or ipa.
If I'll sign for 100g of Wolf and a bag of cascade there will be nothing left for anybody else.
Now ... different story with bittering hops.

Will_D

I quirte agree that if we only get the 9 bags then we have to be creative and maybe hust try for single hop beers.

However I have told them about the idea and maybe we will get some spares.

I also hinted taht after a bit of recipe design the NCB could purchase extras.

Another is like Smithwicks, allow a limitted number of other hops (OK for bittering but as most of these new ones are flavour/aroma we would not like Citra or the big florals.

@geterbrewed

I really like the idea of running a competition with these hops, if you want to work something out and let us know what hops it would take

If we put some sane limits, like say 100g of flavour/aroma hops, then a small bittering charge of a neutral hop from this range or another could allow people a large range of styles. Granted, that would mean no 20L IPA batches and some of the hops featured are in that zone as well...

We could also exclude IPA from our comp. and focus on proper APA or AAA.
