Used Corny - worth buying?

Would you buy a used Corny 'as is'? I'm looking at this offer from The Homebrew Company and wondering if it's a bargain or a bit of a risk...

Any advice on what a novice should be looking for in a Corny system please?

Thanks a million, Flim :-)

They are all pressure tested before dispatch and sent out under pressure as far as I know.
I've had a few and no probs.
It's normally the seals that go on all the second hand ones and easily replaced.
You getting into kegging then?

Fal

I'd recommend them. I've bought a few from them. I did have a problem with a lid on one. But they gave me a replacement without a problem. It is worth getting a bag of replacement seals though.

All the used Cornys I ever bought I replaced all the seals.

I have one ordered also.going to give it a go.cab anyone tell me if this will work OK to force carbonate instead of getting a gas bottle and regulator for my first brew.

Don't think you'll get enough to force carbonate from one bulb, spec suggests it can only serve 7L, which would be at 1/3-1/2 carbonation pressure.

You could (batch) prime the corny with sugar & then use the CO2 bulb to serve.

Looking at the price, esp for the amount of CO2 bulbs you'd need, regulator & gas tank might work out cheaper (& less hassle) by your 2nd or 3rd batch.

thanks for advice .regulator and gas bottle it is so. :)

These kegs are great for the price, but it can be a bit of a crapshoot. I've ordered six of these, four of them have been perfect once you replace the seals, but the caps on the other two have been almost unusable. That said, if you have a problem with anything you receive, thehomebrewcompany are very accommodating and will replace the keg if you send it back.

Thanks everyone, looked like a good deal so figured it was worth an ask around first.
CH - yep, thinking about kegging - slightly scared by the fiddly bits like regulators and what-not but beginning to find bottling a pain. And starting to like my brews enough to wonder how they'd taste on draught...

On the regulator front - any opinions on 2 output / 2 manometer etc? Figured the latter makes sense but is it worth spending a little more on 2 output now? Is it stupid of a beginner to be tempted to buy 3 cornys because the price is right?

Thanks for all the advice :-)

Qs

Well it depends how much you brew. I'd recommend sourcing a fridge first if you want to go for 3 taps, the more kegs you have the more room you need in it.

FlimFlamFlo

Yeah, I think I'm getting a bit carried away  ;D
Better off figuring out how it all fits together first.

Thanks again for all the advice everyone.

The front door of this place is probably the most underutilised resource we have  :(

BrewDorg

That really is the best resource on kegging I've read since I started my research. Fair play to the lads for putting it together.

Can anyone recommend somewhere to get a co2 gas tank in Clare? Thanks
