The Lee Valley Brewing Club will be holding their first Single Malt and Single Hop smash brewing competition on the 25th June 2016 same day as expo.


Entry Free
Drop of location. Franscian Well Cork City.
One beer per person.
Open Style.
Judges. Local Brewers.

SMASH Single Malt Single Hop Homebrew Competition



The Lee Valley Brewing Club are pleased to announce that we will be holding a SMASH Homebrew Competition in conjunction with the Homebrew Expo which will be held in the Franciscan Well, North Mall, Cork on Saturday 25th June 2016.



The Details of the Competition are as follows



Beer of any style can be brewed but it must only contain one type of grain and one type of hops. Yeast and Water.  No adjuncts, flavourings etc to be added.



Two 500 ml bottles of beer per entry and one entry per person. 



Each bottle to be labelled with the name of type of Malt and Hops used



Competition confined to Amateur brewers only.



Entries to be brought to the Homebrew Expo on Saturday 25th June 2016.  To be judged at a later date.   



Separate form to be completed with    Name of Brewer. 

Contact Points – Name Address, email and mobile phone no.

List of all ingredients including type of yeast – name of lab and type of and number of yeast.



There will be no entry fees and Prizes will be awarded for 1st,  2nd and 3rd places – all plaque prizes.



The judging Panel will be independent of Lee Valley Brewing Club.  Judging Panel's Decision will be final and cannot be challenged 



We would welcome all home brewers to take part in this new Competition.

Really looking forward to this.  Well done lads for getting this comp up and running. Hmm, now which SMASH to do....

I will be doing up a standard labeling template for people to print .
There'll be two labels , One with no personal info and one with , both to be put on the bottle with an elastic band .

On accepting the entry , the LVBC reps will number the entries and remove the personal info label . So there can be no confusion over the beers later .

 Update on terms of the competition


•   No professional brewers allowed as it gives an unfair advantage
•   Judges are all working professionally within the beer industry
•   Only bottles received on the day of the Expo will be considered for Judging
•   all entry forms will be handed out on the day and must be filled in and returned to a member of Lee Valley before 18:00 on the day of the Expo
•   announcement of the winners will be via the National Homebrew Club website within one month of the event
•   the winners will be notified directly by e-mail

Here are the results of of the Lee Valley SMASH Competition held in conjunction with the Homebrew Expo this year.

1st Prize      Jack Cullinan, Co Wexford              SMASH APA with Minch Pale malt and Citra
Joint 2nd / 3rd   Laura O'Keeffe, Waterford              SMASH IPA – Ale Malt and Centennial hops
                         Sean Wallace, Cork – LVBC Member   Viennese SMASH – Vienna malt and Hallertauer hops

All beers  judged by independent panel to BJCP Guidelines.

Scoresheets will be forwarded to all participants shortly.

Winners notified by text of results and will be contacted soon re prizes.

Thank you to all who entered the competition and to our judges for giving of their time to do same.

15 entries in total.

Competition was an outstanding success.

I'm told the standard was very high and the judges enjoyed it soo much they made two sessions out of the tasting !!!
