Well im sure kevin is used to working until 10pm anyway with working in sweeneys. It would be crazy to think an off license would open and only work 9-5. Id say 90% of their business is outside these hours. If you're determinedfor a business to suceed then you should be putting in ridiculous hours until you can afford to hire extra staff. No one said he should open late every day. 1 or two nights a weel and sure take a quiet Monday or Tuesday completely off wouldn't be a bad idea.

Leann ull

Very kind of you giving him the time off

May I suggest a 24hr shop.  Just to be sure......  :P :P

Will you be an agent for AJs Co2?     WOuld be very handy for exchanges

Things I would most like to have from a home brew shop in Dublin. Do what you like with this info.  :D

1) Good selection of vacuum sealed and cold stored hop pellets

2) Decent enough selection of liquid yeast (doesn't have to be over the top with unusual stains)

3) Considerable selection of fresh grain and speciality malts

4) Easy to use online shop with next day delivery

I think this list would satisfy many AG brewers in Dublin and would attract business. I usually brew on my days off from work so popping in during normal hours would generally suit me, but Saturday opening would be handy too.

Uhh does that mean I'd have to go to the shop? Can he not just sit in a van outside my house with everything until I feel like brewing?

Dr Brown Ale

Jaysis CH, you're some man for misquoting, taking things out of context and generally twisting things.

Fair play.

Nobody here mentioned opening late EVERY night, but go on ahead and put words in people's posts. That's constructive.

Leann ull

Double Jaysus an I was feeling sorry for you on that other thread and about to sort you out with a 004 solution

I haven't quoted anybody.
Your welcome.

Thanks for all the encouraging words guys. The website isn't working yet (I haven't finished it!), but the address is correct.

Another suggestion would be to link your your stock to the website for grain/hops so people can check it before calling in.

Dunkel

Thanks for all your comments - some food for thought! The main reason I'm closing at five on Thursday, Friday and Saturday is that I'm keeping working part-time in the off-licence to provide cash flow for myself, and I start evenings there at 5.30. If there is demand for later opening on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, or earlier opening on Saturdays, then I will do it. Mondays will be my day off.

@ Johnny cheech

1) Good selection of vacuum sealed and cold stored hop pellets - this will happen, but not until around Saturday 22nd

2) Decent enough selection of liquid yeast (doesn't have to be over the top with unusual stains) - again, Saturday 22nd ish

3) Considerable selection of fresh grain and speciality malts - won't happen before Christmas

4) Easy to use online shop with next day delivery - not sure about whether or not to go the online route

Boycott

Just an idea: do you think you could partner up with deliveroo for on the spot deliveries? Probably no but maybe something to look into

Why not?

Personally I think not to go online in this day and age would be extremely risky. If I was making that list again in your shoes I would put the online aspect very near the top. You just have to look at the other successful HB shops, they're all online. I generally only order from HBC these days, along with many other Jackeens i know. Why? Not because they're close by, but because they have a very good selection of goods and generally provide next day delivery. It's easier for people to make an order online whilst in their sitting room, on the jax with their phone or on the way to work than to make a trip to a HB shop. Delivery companies like DPD now notify you when they will deliver to your chosen delivery address within the hour, and this only costs 4-5 euro for the customer.

BTW I'm not criticising your choices here, just offering my advice. It's your business and your risk, only my opinion. When I way up the cost and convenience of ordering online against making a trip to the HB shop there is only one winner. I'm sure there's many HBers out there that like making the trip to the HB shop but I'm also very sure that there's as many, if not more, that don't have the time these days.
