Folks, for anyone interested in this Bruno said that you can contract him directly for information or to register your interest.

His name is Bruno Aquino and his email address is cervejasdomundo [at] gmail.com

As this is a BJCP event, run by homebrewers with limited resources, in a country I would love to visit (Port Wine??) may I suggest that we, the, NHC sponsor our judges who go to the tune of say €50 each or whatever.

I think we can afford it and the feed back /kudos would be epic.

I would really love to go but at the moment that is impossible.
Remember: The Nationals are just round the corner - time to get brewing

I am hoping that I will make it to the competition.

Just to note that this competition is organised solely by Bruno. He gets some support from local breweries and bars but most of it is down to him and him alone.

The Portuguese Craft beer scene is still in it's infancy. Last year there was only 1 BCJP judged category and that was Double IPA. There were two other categories namely Ales and Lagers. There were no sub categories (as far as I'm aware)

Speaking to Bruno earlier this month he said that he was hoping to split the competition into three legs. One leg in Northern Portugal (most likely Porto), one leg in Central Portugal (Lisbon) and one leg in Southern Portugal (Faro or Algarve somewhere)

As he is organizing this by himself and also that the competition is not expected to take place until October there may be some radio silence from Bruno as he works through the semantics. He is however very keen to get some judges from Ireland to take part. He is even encouraging any interested Irish brewers to submit entries to the competition.

He is aware of this thread so may even register and answer some of the questions himself. In the meantime I will try to answer anything that comes up.

Do you know if he has contacted Bruce, ex South Dublin, who is now living in Portugal (Lisbon?)

+1

I think that would be a worthwhile expense.

Unless Bruce is active in the local scene I'm sure they have not been in touch (well Bruce's name never came up)

That's actually not a bad idea. In fact, I wonder if the BJCP would give anything to an event of that kind, as it's very much part of their mission...
Fermenting: IPA, Lambic, Mead
Conditioning: Lambic, Cider, RIS, Ole Ale, Saison
On Tap: IPA, Helles, Best Bitter

I like the idea as well although I would only worry that we might open the floodgates a little. There's BJCP competitions springing up all over Europe now so the club could be out a lot of cash if we start subsidising heaps of people to go abroad. As always though, a bit of discussion on the subject is a good idea.

Flights to Portugal are normally quite cheap with Ryanair, especially around October. Depending on the dates there's a chance I could go and would probably be able to accommodate a few people (the mrs' parents have an apartment outside Faro).

Yeah I would agree with the concern, our funds should go towards our own competitions and if we needed to subsidise judges to travel to our events or speakers and such.

My sentiments exactly. If we are providing financial support to judges then it should start at home before abroad. Maybe a club T-shirt for travellers might be appropriate if they are representing the club?
