Temp guns in Lidl

Just be aware that these are not remote thermometers.

They measure infrared emissions from the surface of what they are pointed at.

If you have a black cook pot full of boiling water and a shinny stainless steel pot of boiling water you WILL get different readings.

Its all about "emisivity" ie black bodys radiate or absorb heat more that shinny things.

They are great for checking your oven and hot plates but just like a refractometer   you need to know the equipment's limits.

Thanks Will, you're right but used in the right way a temp gun is a handy addition to a brewers arsenal. I use a gun for checking cooling wort, starters and rehydrating dried yeast and thermapen for everything else on the hot side, but in their limited area of usefulness (especially limited around smoke, glass and steam) they are hard to beat.
