Hey all very new to all this still only messing about with non boil extract based kits, which kind of feel like beer assembly rather than brewing.
Anyway I came into possion of a corney keg which I have cleaned (with oxy), sanitised with star San and carbonate using a fire extinguisher (got it from our work fire safety supplier and filled at Munster co2 who also kindly took out the diptube). Problem is there is a funny chemically off taste to my beer. No idea what's gone wrong so don't know how to prevent it happening again.
All advice welcome. Thanks

So many variables could literally be anything.

Did you ever bottle beer? And if so did that come with the same taste?

If not, it's possibly something called carb-bite, in my experience it comes at the end of the mouthful and is a real mingin' taste, I can't even describe it thankfully it's been a while since I fell victim to it. I believe it comes from basically over carbing your beer, especially if you use the fast carb roll the keg method.

A more accurate discriotion of the off taste would help narrow it down.
TCP, green apple, rubber, bandaid & vegetal can all point to different problems.

Metallic or band aid probably best description. I have fmbrewed this in bottles but no off flavour. This is my second batch in this keg. First batch I had sanitised with milton so I thought that's what it was.

Those off flavours sound like they could be from chloramines. Next time try leaving your water out overnight, which will allow the chlorine to offgas, and add some campden to the water to get rid of the chloramines. You can get campden tablets from any homebrew shop and they're cheap enough - 1/4 of a tablet will do 20l of water. Obviously if you're using milton make sure to fully rinse with boiled water, but you'd be better off getting a no-rinse sanitiser.

do you do any mashing
No. Would like to get into it but need to invest in the requisite kit first

Will do. Next time. I have always brewed with the tap water before and haven't had this problem with bottling. Is it worse with kegging due to the higher single volume?

Could be picking up chlorine off the Milton.

That's what I thought but for the current batch I really rinsed the keg out and used starsan to sanitize. Anyway next time will book, campden, different kit, different keg and see how it goes.

empty the keg and fill it with water, then 24 hours later run off a sample of water and taste it. It will help to see if any crap is still in the keg.

Ah, you're in Cork fileup?
While not frequent, keep an eye out for brewdays and meetups.
Where in Cork are you?
Maybe your neighbor is a brewer...

I'm in Grange cork city and would love an opinion on it if someone was nearby. I think the next meet up is there 27th but can't go and don't have anything homebrewed that I could bring either.
