In light of the recent Oxy disaster I was thinking about getting some sodium metasilicate and I was looking at this old thread

http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/equipment-chemicals/home-made-pbw/msg166434/#msg166434

Anyone any recommendations on where to pick this stuff up?

Careful buying chemicals up north, you might end up on a watchlist.    :D

W5 is not a metasilicate!

It is Sodium Percarbonate (Label states ingredients as DiSodium Carbonate compond(ed) with hydrogen Peroxide) [Thats how you make NaPerCarb].

Mistral sell this as well:

May need to check those prices with them
Remember: The Nationals are just round the corner - time to get brewing

Thank you both.

Just to be clear, I didn't says W5 is meta - but here's my thought process in case anybody else wants to give this a try.

This is the MSDS for Astonish oxy plus.  It comes in a 650g tub from Dealz for e1.50.

https://www.dunelm.com/infodocs/msds/30158234-Astonish-Oxi-Plus-Stain-Remover-48256214703.pdf

It says its 30-60% Sodium Percarbonate and 60-100% Sodium Peroxyhydrate.

This is the MSDS for PBW which is an expensive but highly recommended brewing specific cleaner.

https://www.brouwland.com/content/assets/docs/PBW_SDS_EN.pdf

It says its 20-30% Sodium Percarbonate and <25% Sodium carbonate Peroxyhydrate. It also has 20-35% sodium metasilicate.

Looking at the sections in Wheeler and Palmer on cleaning products and the thread I linked in the OP I thought - hey, why don't I put my 650g of Astonish into to my empty 1kg W5 tub and top it up with sodium metasilicate. You'd basically have homemade PBW.

I wasn't able to find a MSDS for W5, but I did find this which lists the ingredients of W5.

I'm not a chemist but I'm guessing that amylase and lipase (and maybe some of the other stuff as well) make it more effective and that the astonish might benefit from the meta.
