Hi, i'm new to home brewing. just doing a bit of research and getting the equipment together at the moment, hoping to kick off my 1st batch in late Jan/early Feb. Iv become interested in home brewing because I am a coeliac for the last 5 years or so and want to whip up my own gluten free beer/stout etc... Iv been researching a bit around gluten free brewing and in particular about removing gluten with clarity fern at the fermentation stage but think ill start easy with a simple GF beer kit and bottle it. (the jury seems to be out on how effective gluten removal is).

The dream is to make a nice GF stout and keg it as that's something that cant be got on the market.(i.e. a Guineans/Murphy's type alternative) I'm based up in Dublin during the week but ill probably be brewing at home in my garage in Tipp as space is tight in Dub.

Considering going straight for kegging so any advice around co2, regulators etc.. and where to get a decent one that wont break the bank as well as general brewing advice much appreciated.

Cheers,
Maher0032

Your best bet is to get to a local brew club with all your questions, loads of brewers to answer all your questions

Here's a great  guide to kegging

https://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/wordpress/2013/10/beginners-guide-to-kegging/

A lot of brewers get co2 from
Ajs in bray.

And welcome to the club

The Dungarvan bitter is made by removing gluten (I'm assuming with clarity ferm or something like) and is certified gluten-free as it has less than the minimum ppm. There's a coeliac in work who drinks it regularly with no issues. He also enjoys the 9 white deer stout - not sure how these are made but I think all or most of their range is gluten free also.

How're ya pal...where are ya in Tipp?

Hi there Maher0032 and James,

Great to hear of brewers in Tipp. Am based in North Tipp. Myself and Donny are keeping the flag sort of flying for the South Central Brewers club. We work in the same place, so club meetings outside of there, haven't happened for a good while, but we certainly could arrange something. Would be happy to help out, if at all possible

how much are you celiac. The brewing process itself removes a lot of gluten and some commercial beers like Coors lite are pretty close to be GF.

Hi James.
I'm based just outside Thurles.

Yeah I'm looking into the brewing process and how it impacts gluten but I'd like to be fairly sure
that it's ok because it wouldn't be worth getting sick over. Might try the clarity fern at have it tested but that can be quite pricey (150 quid ish). I'll wait until I have a few batches done 1st to get the hang of it.

Thanks for the advice lads.

Basic Brewing Radio www.basicbrewing.com/index.php?page=radio cover gluten free beer from a couple of angles. See these episodes:
September 4, 2014 - Clarity Ferm Gluten Reduction Experiment
November 1, 2018 - IBUs vs Wort Gravity and Hop Stand Temps ( Update on Gluten Reduction Experiment looks like its yeast dependent)
August 23, 2018 - Zero Tolerance Gluten Free Club www.zerotolerancebrewing.com who dont trust Clarity Ferm.

I add Clarity Ferm to all my homebrew as the wife is gluten intolerant and its an easy way to reduce the gluten.

Thanks for that Mudder, I'll definitely give them a listen. :P
