Thanks for that Ciderhead, that would definitely make things a lot easier on this end. I definitely don't need all of the EKG that I have straight away so I can probably spare 400g or so. I can do anther buy in 6 months time if we decide to dry hop the barrels.

Hops arrived. Ciderhead picked up the leaf hops this morning and is bagging them tonight with the aim of dropping a few of them out to people on Thursday. Ye would have got his PM about it anyway.

The rest of the hops are going to be bagged tomorrow evening.

Quote from: shiny on April 23, 2013, 11:42:11 PMI thought if your hops, whether they be pellet or leaf, were stuffed into a muslin bag then your utilisation would be greatly reduced?

It all depends on the way the muslin bag is used and the amount of hops in it. If you can stretch the bag to give the hops space to move around that would help (one way to do this would be to use a giant tea ball around which you wrap the muslin bag. Another option is to use a large muslin or nylon bag suspended from a frame that keeps the bag stretched open). And if you make sure to limit the amount of hops in each bag you are less likely to get big lumps where the core remains dry. In my experience 30g is an ideal amount but you can get away with more.

I'd be curious to know if anyone has any evidence that the bags negatively affect utilisation rates. Does anyone know how large isomerised hop acid molecules are? I don't know, but I imagine they'd be pretty small e.g. way smaller than a micron, so presumably they'd just slip right through the gaps in the muslin. As long as the hops get wet in the bag, the hop acids should be able to escape, surely?
