Advice on where to get a 39mm hole saw

Hi there

I managed to get my hands on two heating elements from my local builder suppliers (pays to shop local). The elements were so old they had pound prices on them and the sales guy was not sure they worked so he gave them to me gratis. I fired them up yesterday and happy days they both work.

What you gain on the way up you loose on the way down. The threaded section on the elements is 39mm and this too big for my step bit (1 3/8" - 34.9250mm) and too small for my hole saw 44mm.

So can anybody recommend somewhere I can pick up a 39mm hole saw blade for cutting SS preferably around Dublin?

Hi Delzep,

I reckon 38mm should just about do it. Might have to use a file to take off the additional 1mm but that should not represent too much of a problem just have to go slow.

Thanks for the tip.

Hi Dempsey,

Even better as its closer to my work so I can go there at lunch time and pick it up. What type is your saw (bi-metal, carbide etc)?

Bi metal, you will need an arbor to fit the hole saw in. When drilling Stainless Steel you do know to take it slow and do not let the S/S heat up as this will only temper the steel and make it harder to drill. I like to drill a small pilot hole first and then widen it with the arbor drill bit.

spent hours on the net last night reading about elements for my new keggle and conclusion I came to was the longer the better to minimise caramelisation and have 2 smaller one than one monster as if it blows you always will be able to finish the brew.
Interestingly most of our friends across the water use 2 Haden types in theirs.

When drilling real slow wd40, or water trickled to keep cool

Hi Ciderhead,

My monster 5.5kw element is already installed and going to be used for heating water and not boiling. I intend to install a couple of adjustable relays to control the two elements presuming the ebays ones that I have ordered don't turn out to be junk.

This is the 3kw burco element that I use for my HLT.
It is fitted to the floor of the pot so if you are using a keg then you need to use a steel lump hammer to turn the convex floor of the keg to concave. (I.E. beat the crap out of the bottom of the keg to push the floor upwards.) :)

Saw a set of Bi-metal hole saws in aldi sandyford last week. Full set - im sure 38mm was one of them. Missed the prce but id be surprised if it was more than 25
Not sure whether they were on general sale or left over from a previous run. Alot of the time they have odds and ends hanging round from previous catologues.
