Hi folks,

I've been doing kits for about a year now and have decided to take the plunge and move over to BIAB so that i can start to brew the export and imperial stouts of my dreams - amongst other things. So i've been completely melting my head researching on youtube and I just can't pin down which pot to buy. I'll be going for max 5 gallon batches, but I'm worried that the grain bill will displace a lot of water during the mash. I'm also a wee bit concerned that my (glass) hob might struggle with the weight. Makro do a 36l stainless stockpot - this is going to do me fine, right? Also, DIY wort chiller..... doddle to make? Anyway, sorry in advance if I ask a load of stupid questions for a month or two, it's a bit of a learning curve at the moment.
Cheers,
Michael

hey michael- welcome to the forum

how much is the makro ss pot? i'd say 36L is grand

i've been thinking we should do a belfast brewday equipment build soon one month- maybe include making a bunch of wort coolers in that day? would love to do that as well as modify some kegs...

Mick_K

Funny, taking an angle grinder to the top of a keg had crossed my mind.... then I started reading about burner issues etc - head melted again!
Makro pot is £53.

matthewdick23

I got a 50L ss from ebay in germany which included p&p. i think it was £40, but was def cheaper than £53

Mick_K

Don't suppose you remember the name of the seller at all? I can't see prices close to that for stainless on ebay.

matthewdick23

something like this

contact the seller directly, dont buy thru ebay wit them- they gave me a better deal that way, and its wot others have done on other forums:

mine was 50euro which included delivery and was ss

36L should leave you room for boilover...you shouldn't really need more than a 27/29 litre I imagine, that's what my boiler is anyway.

If you buy soft copper the wortchiller shouldn't be too bad if you have the appropriate tools (I didn't)/

The forum's word censoring replaces "d-e" with "the"  >:(  It's supposed to correct our use of text speak or something?

matthewdick23

thanks garry- yeah, its  .d-e  (without the ' - ')   not .the

Tried to email a few minutes ago, yahoo not accepting the address. Any other ideas? Seems like there's a stockpot market to be cornered here by someone!

the email address I use is:

catering-portal@bergland24.d-e without the -!!

Can we turn off this text speak yoke?
Remember: The Nationals are just round the corner - time to get brewing

Mick_K

Thanks, that one sent ok. hopefully won't have to wait long for a reply.

We've the 36L from Makro and don't need more than that for 25L batches. It's pretty good as every inch in height is approximately 1L in volume - brilliant for when you forget to record how much has gone in! Although if you can get a 50L for cheaper I'd probably go for that.

Definitely be careful of the stove top - have been worried about ours a couple of times! Matthew has a great gas burner which he brought to the brew demo - we're thinking of getting one of those.

matthewdick23

yeah the burner is pretty good- from bangor too.  although I think the price of gas has gone up a lot since my last gas purchase
