Hey all, Just starting my first wine kit this evening. Im just wondering has anyone any advice? This is the equipment I have http://www.homebrewwest.ie/brewsmarter-syphonless-wine-starter-kit-1084-p.asp

Im starting with a Better Brew 7 day, 6 bottle Pino Grigio

Im a little bit confused with the instructions  ??? Do I add the stabilizer after 2 days in the FV or 2 days after the 5 days of fermentation ???

Thanks for any help  :)

LordEoin

The stabilizer will kill the yeast(sachet1), so you want to make sure that the yeast is finished converting sugar to booze.
So 2 days after the fermentation has finished, rack off the lees, add stabilizer(sachet2), de-gas.
Then add your Finings(sachet3), which will cling to all the little particles in the wine. They clump, get heavy and drop to the bottom overnight.
I can't read what's in (sachet4) but probably more finings, follow those instructions, rack off the lees again and bottle your clear nectar!  ;D

I don't see any corker in that starter kit. if you have screw caps, all good. But if you got corks and a corker, be sure to soak the corks in boiling water for 30 minutes before corking, that sterilizes, softens and lubricates them, making your job a lot easier.

Ah ok I get ya  :) So after the fermentation has finished I transfer the brew into the second fermenter and add the stabilizer? Is there a set amount of time to leave between sachet 2 and sachet 3? It says add sachet 4 , 3hrs after sachet 2 or leave overnight. (no.4 is just more finings but a lot larger quantity than sachet 3)  There was no corker or corks with the kit so I bought a 2 handle one and a pack of 25 synthetic corks.

Im finding the instructions on brewing the wine pretty confusing  :(

LordEoin

There is no set amount of time between sachet2 and sachet3.

Once fermentation is all finished:
1 - move to another FV, leaving the sediment behind
2 - add stabilizer
3 - Stir/shake, wait a few minutes, stir/shake, wait a few minutes, stir/shake. Until it's completely flat.
3 - add FiningsA
4 - leave overnight.
5 - Follow step10 (I cannot read it properly)

Homebrew instructions in general can be pretty confusing, don't worry about it :)

Degas then degas and degas and then when your finished degas or you might end up with a few gallons of stink bomb wine just like your truly after one of my first attempts.

Hi Pint!

I have just bought the same kit but no instructions on how to rack without syphoning. I know there are taps but do you turn on the tap and use the hose inserted into the second bucket until the tap runs dry? I'm just afraid that if I do that some of the lees will pour in too or is the tap high enough that only the liquid and not the lees is filtered out? Thanks for any help you can offer.
