Not a fan of mass drunkeness and for that reason I'll be staying at home. No objection to celebrating AG though, as his contribution to brewing was enormous, more than any other Irish brewer, before or since. (Reading a book on Guinness at the moment and their role in the Irish economy up to 1939)

That's what they want you to believe but it's only a made up day thought up by a marketing company  ;)

People don't realise the full genius of Diageo Day, it's not just the loads of extra Guinness drunk on the day but the knock on effects which really matter. For instance, there's a lot of Guinness drinkers who switch to drinking lager during the summer "cause Guinness is too heavy" and then would switch back for the winter when it starts to get darker and colder. Diageo Day is perfectly positioned to get them back in as early as possible without being too close to summer.

And then there's all the people who would never touch a pint of it but find themselves taking a free pint (or even buying one) and enjoying it. The vast majority probably won't stick with it but it no doubt captures a few new Guinness drinkers.

Its a company with directors, shareholders and so on, they want profit and thats how it happens. It wasnt much different in 1700's, business is business.
Big companies buy small companies all the time.. lets focus on what we do, make real beer, drink real beer, promote real beer and enjoy what we do.
Guinness is a nice drink, albeit quite bland versus Wrasslers and beamish and so on, but remember Irish guinness drinkers drink several pints maybe a dozen... I nearly fell asleep in porterhouse one evening after two pints wrasslers :o

So let Arthurs marketing day go ahead and if anyone gets a free pint r 2, just enjoy it and be glad we now have a choice.

and when weatherspoons comes in... :) ;) :D ;D  therll be an awful lot more, maybe guinness wil go back to the craftmanseries again and feature them in Wederspoons on rotation...who knows coz thats wat tetley and others do, they have some fine cask ales althought they normally selly sugary syrup on keg :)

We had the Diageo brewers in the B&C once and after tasting a Kinnegar one of the fellas said that he liked it but it wasn't a session beer and that over in Diageo their aim is to make beers that people can "knock 7 or 8 back in one sitting". Didn't like it when I asked him if they're trying to make "the Budweiser of Stouts".  :P
