hello everyone went a bit mad today and ordered three mash kits from the homebrewcompany and im just wondering if anyone has information regarding any of them. i bought the apollo ipa, brown porter and the hobble wobble. ive a fair idea what the other two will turn out but any experiences you have to share would be great. its the hobble wobble id like to hear about most. it sounds great but ive just no idea what to expect and i think ill do that first.

also i dry hopped an american pale ale today and couldnt resist a taste from the hydrometer and man it tastes good :) roll on four weeks time  ;D

Yes I'm sure it is that. I made a 'Hobble Gobble' (rather than wobble) which I took from HBC recipe page a while ago and that's pretty much what it was.. a Hob Goblin clone.... Styrian, Fuggles..... looks like the same thing. Mine was darker than their description of 'ruby red' but I don't think I followed the recipe exactly....  Was lovely anyway :) if hobgoblin is your thing.

Hi, what's the difference between those mash kits and the extract kits? The extract kits comes with grain you can steep and hops etc. can I buy a mash kit and brew it like extract?

Not sure what you mean. Do you have the equipment to mash the base malts into a wort? Mash tun, BIAB etc...

Never mind, I thought you could just steep the base malts (is that just grain?) like you do with the extract kits you can buy.  Obviously much different.

You could try Partial Mashing. No special equipment needed.

I did one last weekend. Basically I used one tin of extract instead of two and made up the other half by mashing some base malt in a pot.

Check this out; http://www.brewersfriend.com/2009/08/01/introduction-to-partial-mash-brewing/

All you'll need is a decent sized pot, I used a 10 litre pot a stove, a thermomoter, and either a big colander or a big muslin bag from one of the homebrew shops. And a few towels.

If you just buy a few kilos base malt along with your extract kit, you'll have the insurance of the second tin if things go awry. :'(

The satisfaction of getting sweet wort direct from the grain is amazing!

Oh wait, with the mash kits you need to crush the grain first before steeping and extract kits the grain is ready to be steeped already?

Yeah, about 4 miles out

well i did the apollo and the hobble wobble (hob goblin clone why didnt i think of that  :) ) and both smelled great ended up with 2 extra litres of the apollo. i decieded against adding sugar to raise the abv. if i had some spray malt i might have added some. apart from getting the measurements right next time what sort of options are there when this happens. i reckon the malt would be ok. cant wait to see how these turn out

well both the apollo and hobble gobble fermented out and both hydrometer redings tasted really nice. i have to say the hobble gobble has a big similarity with hobgoblin maybe not as smooth but twas only a hydrometer reading so plenty time for that to even out and it did taste nice so happy days so far.
