I took this course in preparation for the General certificate exam. I found it a very intense and worthwhile week.
It will melt your head  ;D

Hi Spud,
I was going to PM you to see if this was the course, but decided to post in public.
Where did you do the course?
How did the cost work out for you?

They have a sliding scale, and the headcount is 6 for Cork, so the price is EUR1350 right now.
If they get to 20, the cost is EUR500 - much more affordable.

johnrm

Maybe its something we should consider.
Get 40 people interested and get it for EUR250.

Spud395

I done it in the Fran Well back in October John, followed up by the exam in November in Midleton. The exam is offered twice a year, November and may I think.
I was funded to do the course so I cant help with costs, there were.
From memory I reckon there were 19 on my course with 6 from existing Irish micros, 1 from a well known micro in the UK, 3 from Irish micros that will open this year, 3 publicans and a clatter of homebrewers.

Tim O'Rourke gives the lectures, I believe there is nothing he dosnt know about beer or it's production!

Hi Spud you look like you did your homework on this one, any thoughts about courses i should be looking at here or overseas where there is more of a focus on tasting akin to a wine sommelier rather than the full brewing education.
I know you are going to say they are of course linked.
I just don't want to become a professional brewer just a professional taster :)

LordEoin

Are there fixed course and registration dates, or are they the same as the dublin ones?
If it was close to the 20 people andwith a bit of notice, i'd be interested for sure.

Blackbrew

Good find John, they were supposed to contact me if this course was held again as I couldn't attend the last one. Have emailed them for more info..

johnrm

This course is on Feb 25 to Mar 1.
For the money that it will cost it is Way too short notice for me and I guess other homebrewers.

I think we should calendar the next one and aim to have our finance etc for the next round.
We can surely rustle up 20 bodies for this.
I'll do some homework on time/location/cost
Assuming this is a runner, and assuming EUR500 or so, lets start a TENTATIVE list...

@Spud: From your experience with Tim ORourke, is he free to do courses off his own bat? Say we cover his time, flights, expenses and throw few good beers?
Then all interested parties need to do is register, pay for and sit exams.

johnrm

Also, if this kite flys (my first time using that expression!) the location will have to be Airport, candidate and venue centric. I'm all for slumming it like I did in college!

He's an extremely busy individual who does business and courses all round the world. He is however freelance, enjoys Ireland and has other business interests here. So with plenty of forethought I'm sure you could come to some arrangement with him.

If the above were to work out, I'm sure that is the course you are talking about Ciderhead. I've been on a few brewery tours with Tim and enjoyed a couple of tastings sessions with him and would highly recommend partaking if you get the chance

I don't see any direct contact details on the above link for Tim.
If you have contact details for him, could you introduce us?
I will then put together an email explaining ourselves.
Thanks!

Spud395

This is his website, not very user friendly untill you can log in but there's a contact mail address. I'm not in regular contact with him or anything but you can certainly drop my name I'm sure it'll impress ;)
