Can Paypal be used to collect deposits?

My problem with deposits and pre-ordering is that it formalises it and might be prohibitive to new people turning up?

Also, I'm sure the Hudson, or any other place for that matter, will hardly turn away any extra business that shows up, if they have the capacity.
