I had a doorstep visit last night from one of these guys.
Nice idea and all that, the wallmount unit shows you your spend, top-up when you want etc.
The pleasant door-step sales guy said that the unit charge is the same as what I'm already on.
Sounds good? Yes, so far.

I was dubious that there was a catch, so I checked.

The rates are 'ok' but there are better out there.
Part-way through the door-step guy makes a call to the office.
I don't like fast-talking salesmen, thats what this guy is, he races through numbers to confuse you.
I said no as he mentioned 'rent' said goodbye and looked here...
http://www.bonkers.ie/blog/could-you-save-money-with-an-electricity-prepayment-meter-/

They can cost you EUR120 to EUR240 more than you're already on.

No thanks, I have overcome cutouts mid-boil.

I was also looking into this, was going to try persuade the landlord to install one, kinda glad now i did not. There seems to be an explosion of sorts of these on the market right now for some reason? I like the idea in principle but as you eluded to there is usually a catch. TBH i think its a shame that Electric Ireland have not brought these out en masse. Currently you have to be something like 2-3k in debt before they will install one of theirs, makes no sense to me ???

It is possible to buy 2-part devices, 1 piece sits on your main incomer, the other in your kitchen/wherever that keeps track of power consumption.
This is a far better job than giving some gobshite your balls on a plate.

People constantly calling to the door trying to sell or cod you into doing something. My standard answer is "I don't buy anything at my door". If they insisted then I insist harder. And as for the Jehovah's  and Fianna Fail types,"WHAT PART OF FOOKOFF DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND".  :)

I normally tell the Jehovah's that they're wasting their time, there is no god and religion is a load of nonsense, as I'm closing the door.

My mate was at a house party once when he spotted the Jehovahs at the door. So he opened the front door and give them a big welcoming 'hello, please come in'. They quickly left once they realised he wasn't any trousers or pants.

Haha. Nothing sinister or seedy. He just thought it would be hilarious to greet the Jehovahs in the buff. Worked a treat.
