The missus is mewling about Tom Jones.
I might be dragged.
Anyone else going?

Tom Jones - not f***ing likely. Pixies, almost definitely. Didn't know they were playing. First thing I'd actually be interested in going to at the Marquee in 5 years. (First child arrived the night The Fall played).

Pixies and Tom Jones on the same billing? Surely I read that wrong?

That's like serving steak with some shite.

Sorry; the above statement  was a little unfair to shite; shite isn't an undeserving, overrated talentless karaoke singer who's biggest fans don't have enough teeth in their head to s**k h*m of* pr*perly.

In fairness, the Pixies should just have left things as they were in 1992. New stuff is pretty awful.

Mr Happy - know your pain; I'd booked tickets, accommodation, etc in Dublin to see Swans in the Button Factory 3 years ago. All of a sudden my second child decided she wanted to make an early appearance, but wouldn't tell us exactly when.
In fairness to my good wife, knowing how much it meant to see Mr. Gira and co, she (from the hospital bed) let me drive down to the gig on the proviso I kept the phone where a signal could be had. Great gig, and the birth didn't happen till the following week.

Oops. Apologies for causing offence to any Tom Jones fans out there. It's just that I put him in that same box as I do M*randa H*rt, East*nd*rs & R*bb*e fucking W*ll*ams.

There is a venue in Cork called 'The Marquee' and a string on gigs take place over the summer.
These 2 gigs are on separate nights, not sure Tom Jones date.
Pixies are supporting Arcade for on 29th June in Dublin, but headline on the 30th.
I'm with you Baz about bands churning out shite beyond their prime. Take AC/DC, I saw them in Punchestown pushing their Steam Train album (whatever), I went to hear there early stuff.

johnrm

Actually the last I heard was 'Death to the Pixies', but not really followed after that.

Bazza

Ah right, got you re the Marquee billing. Arcade Fire's a band I'd love to see live.

Death to the Pixies was a compilation of older decent stuff afaik. But if their new ep is anything to go by they should have left it alone.

Ooo.. the AC/DC thing must have hurt. I was a big fan of the Cure for years and the same thing happened i.e. they decided it was a good idea to keep releasing new stuff after the 80's. It wasn't. Anything post 1989 was just an embarrassing pastiche of former glories, but it made them multi multi millionaires so what did they care?

I caught the Cure in Dublin in 92, great gig, the new stuff does nothing for me. I think the same goes for most artists.
BTW, Neil Young is playing in the Marquee too...

i have heard from a few people that the sound in the marquee is not great in general. i have not had the chance to catch any bands there yet. pixies and neil young are both bands/musician i would like to see. neil young played a gig recently at rds in dublin so he can still pull a good crowd. i saw pearl jam at green glens in Millstreet about '96 or '97 it was one of the first gigs i went to. again i think they have got a bit flat since their no code album

Hmmm... food analogies...food analogies... I'm trying to think of a food that made one fantastic album, 2 decent albums and the rest were pretty forgettable... Hmmmm...
