I won't bore you with the details (yaaaay) but after a year of Vodafone internet woes with it being up and down like a pair of underpants i was on the phone for the umpteenth time this evening to their tech support and was told by the guy on there that the socket where i plug in my router was showing unusually high capactance, he could not find any other fault anywhere besides that. This is the first time anybody at Vodafone has mentioned this. Could someone in the know please explain what they mean by this please ?

Oh that's pretty shit, what do your neighbours get?
Is your router plugged in at the point your line comes into the house?

Covey

Lots of faults are due to the weather at the mo, i can see the Mast from my window but has been OOA scince before xmas my signal is not coming for another mast miles away one bar FFS
i wam wee todd did i am sofa king wee todd did

the capacitance is close to the resistence on the line.  the further from the exchange you are the higher the reading, a fault on the line could also cause an abnormally high reading. if they are describing it as unusually high the probably should be logging a fault for you

Only talk to the one neighbour(lol) but they are also with Vodafone and getting similar speeds, same router as i have, the netopia one from Eircom, all settings are for Vodafone though. ::) Yes router is plugged into a dual socket in kitchen which is where the line comess into the house, dual socket as in the phone is plugged into one socket and the router into a separate one on the same socket box ;D

Can I assume that your using the copper wiring in to the house from eircom? If so and your getting poor speed due to a faulty line Vodafone should be able to fault logged with Eircom to get the issue sorted.  Have you considered switching supplier?

As CH knows i am only 30 feet across the road from the exchange, they told me that after i called them last week an engineer checked the line at the exchange and it was fine so its not that according to Vodafone. They have logged another fault for me and i am waiting on a call from Eircom engineer at some stage soon i hope so he can come to the house and check the actual socket box where the router is plugged in. Vodafone also told me i will not be charged for this but we will see i guess. ;)

Yes Shanna the line was installed 4 years ago by Eircom when i was with them, Vodafone have now logged another fault and i am waiting on Eircom engineer to contact me to come to the house. I had considered switching providers however since its all Eircom anyway i see no point in doing so, Eircom packages are also no better than Vodaofne. ;D

My mother had similar problem in Limerick. Having to deal with both Eircom and Vodafone is not ideal.  You could ring eircom and ask them to confirm how far you are from the switching Centre and what is the congestion ratio for their broadband service.

slim chance of getting an answer from eircom if you are not their customer.
contention ratio would be 48:1

Shanna i can see the exchange from my front window, out my front gate it's only 30 feet to the front door of the switching centre/exchange ;D

I agree but i don't really blame them for that TBH, currently Eircom/Vodafone/Sky are the only three ISP's in my area, however that's kinda moot since it is all coming through Eircom lines anyway :'(

Lucky you Greg2013 that you have that choice and fixed line broadband! Some of us rural dwellers have to make do with 3's 'national broadband scheme' (sic)  ::)
