Hi There,
I picked up this SS 50L Boil pot for cheap on German Ebay for 60Euro..thought I was onto a good thing until, the large coke can arrived  :P a hard poke with your finger would put a dent in it (1mm all around) .. Has anyone any experience with these very thin pots operating on a strong gas burner? Could there be issues.
Got a Step drill from www.handyhardware.ie and stuck the weldlesss fittings I got from http://www.chicompany.net/

The Torpedo I have is Heavy duty 304 stainless steel 井16 mesh. The mesh looks large enought to catch large hop particles but not the slop you get in a Boil pot, Before I used to sphion from the pot into a large funnel(That has a fine Hop bag covering it) sitting on my fermentor, this caught all the slop.

I'm not sure if it'll fit yet, but I found these air filter in Stainless, 井MESH 30 and 60

Do you think these filters would be too fine(clog up) or a good size?

Biggest problem with any hop filter is the amount of surface area you have for the wort to filter through the hop and break gunk that will build up against it. As the gunk builds up the flow rate slows down. What about whirlpooling the hot wort, then draining from the side of the pot through a  hop filter fitted outside the pot. The item you posted http://www.wholesaleweldingsupplies.ie/index.php?route=product/product&filter_name=filter&product_id=1187 could be fitted into a pipe so the wort/gunk is drained into the middle of it and it holds the gunk inside with the clear wort passing on to the chiller and on to the FV. Because you would have whirlpooled then most of the hops/gunk will have piled up in the centre of the pot.

I use same bazooka filter in my pot and it works very well with leaf or pellet. You will have no problems there.

I heard about your Epic Berwday Shane  ;D I'd say the pot couldn't get a better test so thanks for the feedback. (By the way, be careful about what tool you use on stainless! Make sure the wire brush(Stainless bristles) is good for stainless, use the wrong one and it'll start creating rust where the scratchs are....discovered that with welding, have a seperate set of cutting tools and brushs for stainless)

Low carbon steel, will camtanimate your stainless

Bryan I don't have a pump which I think you need for the whirpool..but from your link that's obviously a very good way of handling the crud. The air filter only have a surface area of about 40cm squared which isn't much, good point about the surface area! I know I have to clean off my nylon sheet about 5 times as I'm running the wort through it.

Greg, If you don't speak German like me, you're better off just emailing the lad at Catering-Portal.Bergland@msg.afterbuy.de
60 Euro to the door, yes :)
here's the link in case you do

Mark, you reckon I shouldn't bother with an extra layer of filtration? Do yuo tip your pot at the end to get the last bit of wort or do you do any external filtration before it hits your fermentor? you don't find you have a large amount of sediment in your fermentor apart from the Yeast?
Thanks

It all I use. Works a treat. I leave material settle then draw off gently into fermenter. Never had an issue with it.

So our management has decided to stop selling and shipping abroad. I'm very sorry :(

If you want a decent quality kettle I would recommend the ones on mybeerandwine.ie. Mine is like this one in the link but it came with a welded 1/2" fitting, ball valve and bazooka. http://www.mybeerandwine.ie/heavy-duty-stock-litre-p-309.html

I have the 36L one and it is a serious piece of kit. Good heavy pot with ferrous base so it works on induction hob. There is no way you'd put a dent in it with your finger  :P

Yep bummer allright, and then you have the bloody shipping from UK which is atrocious at the best of times :(

Edit: email sent to powellbrewing.co.uk. Am i correct in thinking those pots have a skirt around the bottom and are meant only for a gas burner ? ;D

Yep, there is a tit for tat going on between Royal mail and An post, needed a taillight for my bike badly, It was posted last Monday, arrived in Heathrow and was Delivered today a week later. Honest 'An Post' customer service agent told me that it sits in Heathrow for the week. but An post do a similar delay tactic with UK mail :)

What do you mean about the skirt? The pics above show a simple curve as most pots have...they just press the shape out of steel...No fancy skirts.....you fiond the skirts on the side of Gas burners to deflect the wind and focus the heat upwards.

Greg2013

The thermo pots on powellbrewing like what that German lad has all have skirts on the bottom ?  ;D I have my eye on the 38.5lt model with the ball valve, i think its good value at £100 depending on what the shipping is like of course.
