Anyone here got any scobys they can part with?

I've started two kefir scobys, one from a commercially bought kefir and one from an old jar that I had standing around for about two years and decided to bring back to life. I've not consumed any kefir from them yet, but will shortly.

I am interested in a kombucha scoby, is anyone making it?

I'll happily give up some kefir grains once I am happy that the scobys are where I'd like them to be.

Somebody must be fermenting something apart from beer and wine......nobody?

I can buy the scobys on amazon....not thrilled about that option.

That was like my wife talking about shoes, all I read was blah blah blah, what the hell is that stuff :-[

Scoby...a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast.
It's a bit like Yoghurt making, you take kefir grains and then ferment out either milk or water with sugar and fruit added, and you get either lemonade or a fizzy yoghurt. They are probiotic drinks.
There is also Kombucha which is fermented sweet tea, this uses a scoby on top, kinda like when you find a fruit juice that's stood around with the lid on after being contaminated, that raft on top of it is a scoby.

Words like kefir threw me so I just blocked them out. Then it all made sense!

Have you never had kefir? It's quite nice stuff. It's a bit like fizzy yoghurt, takes getting used to but is nice.

Bumping this in case anyone has any microbes that they can part with,.

Hiya,

Just wondering if you got any Kombucha scobys in the end? I'm on the hunt...

Or even if you know of where to buy a bottle of real raw unpasturised kombucha, apparently you can grow your own from that...

Yeah I've not come accross anything in the meantime. I'm on a facebook group called wild fermentation and I have my own 5L crockpot of sauerkraut on the go at the moment but I'd still like a kefir scoby or a Kombucha scoby to be getting on with. https://www.facebook.com/groups/WlidFermentation

I had some really old kefir in the fridge from about two years ago (brewing fridge) that I had left completely unattended, so I tried to restart that but had no confidence in it in the end and threw it out.

I also haven't been able to find any live kombucha in Ireland, but then I've not looked too hard, but I did look in a mega Tesco a few weeks back in the UK and they also had none :(

Tiny company in Smithfield make Kombucha, I'm sure they'll sort you out. I saw kefir on done deal or adverts the other night, free of charge too
