Guys,

I am making a simple recipe , pale ale 3500 pa/ 350 crystal.
Comes in at 3.9 on my beer tools
Was going to go for a single hop using centennial .

I have tried Apollo before , it's great for flavour and aroma but the bittering  was slightly off.

anyone tried using centennial as a single hop ??

Recommend it ? If not which hops would you recommend ?

St. Fursey

I haven't used Centennial but I would recommend Galaxy for a single hop IPA

Ive not brewed or had a Centennial single hop beer but it seems lots have going off ratebeer.

I brewed a mosaic pale ale which was lovely. (Scored 40 at the Lucan County) 3.7% abv iirc. 38 IBU, No 60 min addition, just a bunch of mosaic at 20 mins & the rest at 0 mins for a 30 min steep. Dry hop 2.5 g/ltr. (could have done with more)

Ive had two or three commercial examples of a Citra single hop. Fyne Jarl was the best by far. Oakhams was the least impressive.
On tap: Flanders, Gose,
Fermenting: Oatmeal Brown, 200ish Fathoms,
Ageing: bretted 1890 export stout.
To brew:  2015 RIS, Kellerbier, Altbier.

+1 for Mosaic and Citra.

Brian_C (I think) made a lovely Nelson Sauvin single hop beer as well, though I know Nelson isn't to everyone's taste.

Nelson Sauvin is great for a single hop beer. We also did a Chinook one which was pretty good.

I did a pilgrim single hop last year turned out really nice
Primary: Back to Black Again (Michael Jackson stout)
Secondary:
Conditioning:  Breac Donn Imperial Amber Ale
Drinking: Cascade Reaction Amber Ale, Fear Gorm Irish stout, lonesome pilgrim pale ale
Planned: imperial stout, finlandia kit hack

I think founders centennial ipa is a single hop. Nice beer too.

Ah Tom, it's a great beer  :)  Did you have it fresh?
Every little helps

Centennial is a great choice for a single hop beer. It delivers on bitterness, flavour and aroma.

Or split your batch in half and do two totally separate single hop beers.

...and then blend a third of each beer to end up with 2 single hops and 1 double hop  ;)

From a bottle. BB date was Dec 14 so Im guessing it was bottled Dec 13. It wasnt a bad beer, just the least impressive of the Citra beers Ive had. Fyne Jarl is a super beer to my taste buds. If thats on draft im on it all night.

I've always found single-hop ales to be a bit lacking, to be honest. I think the complexity you get from a blend of 2 or 3 hops is the way to go. Having said that, Centennial has such a great flavour, I couldn't think of any other hop varieties I'd prefer in a single-hop beer. Except perhaps, Amarillo...  >:D

Dr Jacoby

Yea, I find a lot of single hopped beers that use American hops to be less impressive than some of the blended beers out there. Though I can't say I find the same thing with lagers or bitters or most Belgian beers I've tried. I think it's probably beers that are trying to be very hop forward that most benefit from a blend of hops, but of course there are always exceptions. Epic Pale Ale is all cascade and when it's fresh it's amazing.

Had the Galway Bay Galaxy IPA at Against the Grain a while back and it was the best beer of theirs I've had.  I assume by the name that it's a single hop, but can't find any more info on it.

It's either a different Galway Bay beer you had, perhaps Chinook, or it was Trouble Brewing's Galaxy PA.

Haha, that's what it was.  Lovely stuff, best Trouble so far.  Might get some Galaxy and try to do something like it myself.
