Hi Chaps

I am looking at getting a 25kg batch of base malt soon, I have checked the HBC and seen several sources that they offer. IS there one to avoid from an efficiency viewpoint? Theres Bairds, Muntons, Crisp Malting Group, Fawcetts etc just very confused as to which one gives the best value.

Any pointers??

Why not look into a Belfast club group buy of malt. You can get it delivered now from MCI in cork as well as UK. Much cheaper that way and then get your speciality malts from the homebrew shops. :)

This is a great idea - is there normally a minimum order quantity for group buys?

@Andy - I've only purchased a few 25kg bags of malt but always went for the Thomas Fawcett Maris Otter. I'm not sure why I originally chose their malt but have just stuck with it ever since.

Do you think there would be much differences in the base malts? I would have thought that efficiencies would have been fairly similar.

Min order from a maltser is usually a ton (40x25kg bags) and IMO with regards quality it's Weyermann top dog and a toss up between Warminster and Fawcetts next. Bairds are probably cheapest and a great extraction but poor quality

Thats a great idea Dempsey - I am not sure as to the uptake from the rest of the lads, we have a brewday soon so will enquire.

@Sub where did you get your malt from?

Not sure we'd have the demand for 40 bags but definitely worth asking.

I usually get from the HBC.

In the best tradition of how to start is,start a wish list of what you want :)
1: BrewBilly  25kg pale
2: Sub82      25kg pale/crystal/chocolate/and the kitchen sink :) :D
Ye get the idea but leave out the crystal unless you want to have it hanging around forever. 200grams for a brew taken from a bag containing 2500grams has caught some people before, cant remember who ::). The kitchen sink although can come in handy :).

Does the kitchen sink have a high diastatic power?!  ;)

Ciaran

Would an order of a tonne comprise many different grain types or is it one tonne minimum for a single type?  Crushed or whole etc...

CARA

You can get a mixed pallet no problem (same with crushed/uncrushed) but they have to be in multiples of 25kg

I always find I get more extract from Fawcetts than any other maltster.

They also extract more from my pocket than any other maltster.

We could go for this but it depends when it'll be arriving. We've just bought a load of malt so probably won't be buying for another 6 months!

Andy - I just sent you an email re. malt.
