Wort gone missing.

I brewed this today.

   Exactly with the recommended quantities for water.    Only lost one degree in my mashtun

Used hop cones in the boil but lost 2L due to the hops soaking up the wort.      Do folks normally give them a good ringing out?   I had 19.5L after the boil but after cooling I am down to 17L     

How does one calculate loss due to soakage of the hops.      Can one simply add more preboil water?

There's a good dose of hops in it and you'll have your break also. I wouldn't be too shocked at that loss.
I'm not aware of a formula to work out loss to cones but I'd be interested if there is one.
I wouldn't ring them out. Maybe let gravity drip out some wort. If the physically wring it you may extract undesirable flavour if you overdo it.

Was worried I made a mistake in my calculations. 

Started with 23L preboil and ended with 19.5 exactly as brewmate forecasted after 70mins. 

Starting to get the hang of this brewing lark.       Great day for it.     :D

Thanks for the invite.  It may not be ready but I have another one that might be. 

I used  dried english ale yeast Safale S-04 as I did not have the yanky stuff in my home stock. I'm hopping this wont make to much of an impact on the final product.  finger crossed.   

Just one question with regards on quantities.

Im really after a fruity taste in this American IPA.   I was thinking of dry hopping it with yet more citra .  I had a taste of some great US IPA over the weekend that really caught my fancy and I love the style. 

How much citra hops do you think I should I use to dry hop  17L ?

About 15 or 20 grams I'd say

If you loose too much water to the hop soakage and/or boil off the answer is simple.

Measure the gravity of the wort. If its too high you can either just brew with it to make a stronger beer or dilute with boiled water to achieve target gravity.

Also if the wort is a bit om the low side boil longer and harder.
Remember: The Nationals are just round the corner - time to get brewing

As Will says, don't be afraid to adjust by adding water at the end.

I use a hop sock and always squeeze it out well at the end of the boil, no undesirable flavours are extracted.

Thanks.   My 3rd allgrain now.    Learning more each time.    Tesco have a little cheap mesh bag with a zip for cloths pegs.  Looks perfect for dry hop.   going to buy it today.
