Guys

I'm very very new to all-grain, boiler and chiller getting delivered tomorrow I'm that new.

I have downloaded the trial of BeerSmith and am trying to get my head around it. Have setup my equipement and would like if someone could have a quick look to see if I have anything completely wrong. I know I'll have to adjust values as I get a couple of brews done to get figure more accurate. But just to check that I'm not a 1,000,000 miles off.

I have also attached a recipe which I'm messing around which to see what volume I need etc.

Does it look right or am I doing something wrong.'

Will 29.3l of liquor and 4.8kg grain fit into the boiler?

TheCavanMan

That's a good point, I was messing around BeerSmith and I may have to add water to the kettle after mash.

As I've never done it before, I don't know what 5kg of grain looks like (size wise)

From what I've read on the net, I've increased the following

Boil Off = 4L per Hour
Top Up Water to Kettle = 5L

That brings me down to 26.50L + Grain, hopefully that will fit in the 32L Boiler.

Hi,

I recently did a BIAB with 25L initially in the boiler and then added my grain.  I was left with around 2.5 inches or so to the top of the boiler.
You may just get away with 26.5L

Some pictures that may help give an idea of the levels.

There's a calculator at http://www.rackers.org/calcs.shtml which shows the amount of space you'll take up. Here it's 29.7 litres, so you should be ok. It looks like you're doing a no-sparge method. I don't have any experience here, so just wondering how your mash thickness will affect the efficiency. Normal single infusion mash ratio of liquor:grist is around the 3.0 mark; here you're suggesting around 5.5.

It really needs an experienced BIABer to answer this  :)

How much grain did you put in?
What was your volume before boil?
What was your volume after the boil?

Sorry for all the questions

Dunkel the liquor to grist ratio of 5.5 would be pretty average for BIAB.
My highest ratio was 6.3, I had a mash efficiency of 75% with that ratio.
My lowest ratio was 4.2, I had a mash efficency of 65%.
My average is about 70%

If you cant fit all the water in your mash tun you could do a sparge after the mash with the water you could not fit into mash tun. This should boost your efficiency.
My normal brew start with 32ltrs of water and I finish with a 23ltr batch in the fermenter. I normally loose 9 ltrs total.

BTW I brew in a keggle so plenty of room.

Apologies, I just reread my post and it does not match up with what I actually  :(       http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,7501.msg94125.html#msg94125 is a link to a post of the brew I did with the correct figures. There was also approximately 5KG of grain.

Has anyone observed/calculated the boil off rate for the 32L peco yet?  @TheCavanMan How did the numbers in your original post work out, would you tweak them since?

TheCavanMan

To be honest I was keeping too much track of them. Was more working on getting think right and not forgetting at add anything.

Plus I had a few beers
