Could someone shed some light on this maybe I brewed a hbc citra ipa last Saturday my og was 1.050 I had to add 1.5 litres to fv to get it down to that it was at 1.056 iirc instructions said it should be 1.046 although I did this as biab and instructions were not for biab so I winged it a little anyway I checked to today which is 8 days in the fv and the gravity is 1.006...is this strange??

Couple of quick questions. How are you measuring your gravity e.g. what tool are you using? What is the temperature of the sample as this can throw off the reading? Did you add any additional simple sugars in to the fermentor as these would be practically 100% fermentable and this could result in a lower final gravity than if you had not added them. Its most likely your temperature if off or your making some mistake in doing the reading.

I'm using a glass one that comes with the kits. The temperature is quite low as I have no heat belt and a very cold house it is 18°C it has been like that from the start. I didn't add any additional sugars just the grain and hops I got with the grain kit. The air lock went crazy for the first 2-3 days then slowed down. I know the temperature is low but it has not been fluctuating. I tasted some from the trial jar a few mins ago and it tastes so so good.

Should I be concerned about the gravity?

The gravity reading is a tad low for a beer but not entirely unusual. The temperature of the beer inside the fermenter would be a a few degrees higher than the air due to the activity of the yeast. Is it possible you misread the reading? I don't think there is anything wrong and given what you have said it should be okay. I would wait at a few days for the airlock to go completely quiet and then take a couple of readings over a few days. If its not budging then its likely to be finished.

I thought I misread the reading but I checked and double checked. It pretty much has stopped I'll take a reading on Tuesday and see what it's like!

Thanks!

Meant to ask but forgot, what yeast did you use?

I used Muntons Gervin GV12 yeast. I did a 90minute steep and a 60 minute boil.

Qs

What temperature did you mash at?

How was your sanitation?

I mashed at 67℃. Sanitation was very good it tastes very good I wouldn't say there is any infection well I hope not!

Qs

Have you checked the hydrometer is correct? Try it in some water and make sure it's at 1.

Yep I did that when I got it it's bang on 1 at 20℃ water!

Qs

Well I dunno then. Must be some crazy yeast. :P

TheCavanMan

That's mad.

I bottled a Bulldog Double IPA abput 4 weeks ago, it started off 1.063 and finished at 1.002 so I have
seen a beer go that low. However fermenting it at 18oC took 23 days.

Are you sure your temperature didn't go high, higher temperature would make it ferment out quicker.

nigel_c

I'd be more worried about the beer that finished at 1.002  ???
