HBW MAlt Trial - Pale Malt

HBW have kindly offered to give out 25 KG bags of some of their new malts to clubs so that we can try them and give some feedback on what they're like.

I have secured a bag of Best malz pale ale malt for the North County brewers to try out, details here http://www.homebrewwest.ie/best-pale-ale-malt-50-to-70-ebc-25-kg-5604-p.asp


The malt is being donated on the grounds that;

  *  This trial is for feedback on the two malts that HBW are sponsoring.
  *  Each bag should be split up amongst the club in ~5kg lots, to allow a few members to try it out.
  * 2 simple feedback reviews are required per bag of malt that you receive, e.g. how efficient the mash was? OG vs other malts, what did it taste like?, would you use it again?, etc

So hands up, who wants 5KG of free pale malt to brew and review?  remember theres only 5 X 5KG lots.

Ok so the Pale Malt has arrived. I will bring it up on Saturday to divy up.

Molc said he was sourcing bags.

Are we still OK and can you bring bags on Saturday?

If not you need to bring a sack fro 5 kg

As there was some confusion about getting hold this I have just checked the sack and its Best Pilsner Malt.

Yeah mine arrived today and it's an unmarked pilsner malt. Also for bags, all I have are a few plastic bags like you get from a supermarket.

I can bring the sack over on Saturday morning if you like.

Hi lads,

A friend of mine from Brazil came to visit here in Ireland, he arrived Yesterday. He also makes beer at his home over there and he wishes to meet the homebrew community here in Ireland. I googled about craft beer as well as home brew in Ireland and I've found this website.

I've just seen this topic related to the event that is going to happen tomorrow. I have no idea how it works, however, I really appreciate if anyone can tell me if we could go to this event.

That event is open to the public and free to attend. So just turn up and say hello to the guys with the brewing equipment.

Review Time!
Base Setup
I use a herms for the mash. Usual process is mash for 60 mins, mash out at 76 for 10 minutes, then drain and sparge to the BK over 10 minutes, assuming herms has extracted most of the useful sugars to allow for a short sparge.
Normal efficiency is in the 72-77 range, depending on grist. For this test, I'm using a similar grist to the previous beer, a brown ale with maris otter, which achieved 77% efficiency.

Taste
Quite a strong grainy, almost slightly toasty flavour from the raw grain, more so than I've noticed in some other base grains. Not quite as crisp and crunchy as the last batch of Weyerman or Castle that I've used.  Mashed grain flavour was typical of other base pale malts.

OG: 1.044 - Target was 1.045

Efficiency: 73.4% Note, I think the sparge went down on only half the grainbed in this mash, as I drained a little too fast. There is probably a few more points left in the mash tun as a result.

Overall Impression
Decent base grain in line with others. Will need to see how the beer works out to see if anything additional was imparted in the flavour that can be noticed. Would be interesting to see the results of someone just using the grain in a smash or without additional colouring grains to see what the base colour is like after a mash.
