Dry January - Seriously?

Are there many on here doing this?

The number of people I've encountered this week telling me 'Oh, I'm doing "Dry January"'...

"Doing Dry January"? Is that a universally accepted term now?

The only thing that's gotten me through this week is the thought of sinking a cold one this evening. And I'm not referring to turkey.

Do people wreck themselves so badly in December they feel the need in January to:
- Give up booze
- Give up caffeine
- Join a gym
- Take up running
- Give up red meat
- Eat nothing that hasn't been through a blender first
- Start going to Mass
- Start going to Confession
- Throw out the Devil's music
- Cause their local to close
-etc

,or is it just the 'trendy' thing to do like 'juicing' and 'bearding'?

If I have included any detectable opinion into the above text, it's unintentional  :P

P.s. I'll appreciate the irony if this turned out to be my last ever post  :-\

They say that on the first or second day of January but ask them again on the 10th or 12th and see them mumble off some good reason why they will do it next year :D

If you've wrecked yourself so badly in December that  you need January off the beer maybe you should consider forever off the beer.

I'm doing  'Try- anuary' :)
Much more fun in my opinion! 😜

T'would be a great thing for a person with a split personality, one could  drink and the other could stay on the dry :D

Couldn't have put it better :)

Though I still suspect it's 80% the 'trendy' thing, like ladies who feel the need to wear designer lycra for the 20-yard walk from the car to the school gate/post office/offie/cake shop/etc.

Its gone a bit trendy alright but I think thats more to do with dieting than with actual alcohol consumption.

People I know who were doing it before the trend are people who drink too much the rest of the year and going off the beer for a month seems to be a way for them to prove something to themselves, not that drinking yourself stupid all year round except for Jan means you have your drinking under control.

You mean giving up shaving for the month - isn't that in November?

I'm taking it easy for Jan - detoxing for a doc appointment.
