Hangovers

I suffer pretty badly from hangovers and am just wondering are there other people in the same boat? And if so, how do ye cope? Since entering my 30s hangovers have gotten worse but at the moment it's not even worth it.

Had two 500ml NEIPA's (6.5%)last night, slept ok and today it feels like I had 3 or 4 times it. I have been avoiding sessions of late but not being 100% after two beers the previous night is a farce. Usually my quality of sleep deteriorates once I go over 4 drinks.

I am seriously contemplating giving up beer completely, which sucks as I love trying different beers, love brewing and would struggle to socialise without it.

Would be good to know that I'm not the only one in this situation.

Drink as much water as you humanly can before going to bed. 3-4 pints minimum, one after the other. Always does the job for me. Can definitely feel the hangovers getting worse too, but I've still a bit to go til 30!

They've absolutely worsened with age but I got a good tip a couple of years ago and don't suffer too badly now - pint of water with a dioralyte sachet & berocca tab before bed and the ill effects are drastically reduced. The more water you can drink the better as well but those two are a gamechanger.

I pre-hydrate and post-hydrate with Diuerlyte. Great stuff. Prevents dehydration which is half the fight.

The sleep thing is a different story. If DTs cause you sleep disturbance, theres no getting away from that.

I know there's a few tips and tricks that work or don't work depending on who you are, but I think the biggest factor is age. You can't expect to be getting away with the same stuff in your mid-40s as in your mid 20's; it's just more physically difficult the older you get.

Same with other non-drinking activities. I'm hitting 45 and still play 4-a-side footy on a Monday evening, where some of the lads are half my age. It's usually Wednesday before I feel right again, when my limbs loosen up and the profuse sweating stops. I never sleep properly on a Monday night; it's that same ould light useless sleep you'd get on a Sunday night after a 2-day weekend bender.

I'm not ready to give up either beer or football, so hydration tips such as above help for both  :)

If I have a few at home and have to get up early I always eat something after drinking, just a slice of bread or something. Have that and a couple of pints of water and it makes a big difference. Scale it up for a night out by having a meal or at least go to the chipper after. I think managing a hang over is the main thing. Diorlyte is great, never let your hangover go hungry, that will kill you. So yeah foot and water, obvious really I suppose.

I used to get terrible hangovers when i drank too much commercial beer or wine but something I've noticed is that since switching to AG beers I definitely get drunk a whole lot quicker due to the higher ABV but my word one now is a dull ache whereas before I would be the sick I would have thrown up at times. So sticking to AG and craft ales.

Milk thistle is great but more as a preventative measure and to improve liver health in general.  Make sure you get a single herb product rather than a complex or blend of other herbs. Ive seen 'milk thistle complex' capsules made by A. vogel that also contain dandelion extract which is a diuretic and could actually worsen dehydration from a hangover if taken the morning after. Great if you want to dry out for a month or 2 and repair some liver damage but I wouldn't take them to cure a hangover. Saying that, milk thistle on it's own won't instantly cure a hangover either. But taken over time it has been shown to increase the liver's ability to self repair.   (just in case,  I'M NOT A DOCTOR.)

+1 to what everyone else said about food and water, never go to bed without a pint of water

Danny, you said you had 2 NEIPA's. Would it be the high concentration of suspended yeast affecting you do you think? or would you be as bad after the same amount of clear beer?  I know I feel worse after a few cloudy beers

That's a good question. The answer is probably. I haven't drank more than one beer at a sitting in about 6 weeks. I have had similar levels of "knowing I had a few last night" after a tasting of up to 4 beers at a club meeting.

Will try the milk thistle, thanks for the recommendations.

I find eating plenty of carbs before a session, as much water as possible before and during bed, a snowball of paracetemol and ibuprofen in the morning, all rounded off by a load of salt and grease all throughout the next day usually does the trick.

Since moving to hoppy beers I don't get much of a hangover unless I drink whiskey as well.

Activated charcoal during your session.

Helps filter out the congeners, which contribute to hangovers.

You can buy it in Holland + Barrett's.
