QuoteThe flow of US craft beer sales slowed suddenly last year, causing the prices of speciality hops to decline.

The fall in demand for hops, and subsequent price reductions, comes as many global hop producers are increasing the size of their planting areas.

Yet breweries over here are struggling to get decent supply of US hops. Rascals said they can't get Amarillo this year for example

It's the big boys coming in and buying the entire stock fro the farms that is pushing up the remaining varieties. The likes of Topaz being used in hop house 13 and now it's impossible to get.

Qs

A part of the problem I've read is that when there was a bit of a shortage the farms hyped it more than they needed to and breweries bought extra in case the supply dried up further, now theres been a good harvest but a lot of breweries aren't in need because they stocked up last year.

I wish!  On problem is they don't seem to re-sell stock at end of year or quarterly at all so it never makes its way back into the marketplace, we've all heard stories of surplus hops being tipped.

Hypothetically speaking...if a brewery was offered surplus hops, I wonder would the brewery be open to selling them on!!
