Lime Wheat Beer

After tasting & being very impressed with Bren Murphy's lime wheat beers at Wednesday's Liffey Brewers meet I thought I'd throw one together myself.

Bren had 2 different variations with him on Wednesday. 1 was made with a whole lime quartered & added in primary. To me this one had a bit of an acidic taste more like lemon than lime. Qute tasty, very refreshing but the second one he had hit the mark more for me. This one had a whole lime added to primary but only the skin was scored a few times with a knife. Both were made using the Make Your Own Beer kits, the kit yeast & a kilo of brewing sugar.
These kits are only €7.66 in the Home Brew Company right now http://www.thehomebrewcompany.ie/make-your-own-beer-wheat-beer-40-pints-expire-april-13-p-1637.html That's half the price of a Coopers kit & they are good quality. Get on it!!!  ;D
I've a few of these on order so just used the ingredients I already had at home.

1 x Coopers Wheat Beer Kit
1kg Wheat dry malt extract
1 lime
Brewferm Blanche yeast

Standard kit & kilo procedure with a whole lime dropped in boiling water for a couple of minutes to sterilise it then scored the skin (not cut through) a few times all the way around & dropped it into the wort then added the rehydrated yeast.

Topped it up to 23 litres. O.G. was 1.042.

Never used this yeast before so be interesting to see what it comes out like.  And if the beer is a bit like Bren's version then I'll be happy  :D

I should have it at the July Liffey Brewers tasting. Bren - if you can hold onto a bottle of yours till then we can have a side-by-side tasting?

all gon colin that batch u liked, the other one has develloped great in the keg...the lemony bitterness is gon and the yeast seems to have develloped the banana and bubblegum sweetness, very nice to me and the beer is generally a lovely wheatbeer.

Surprised u used a different yeast.. dont waste the pk that came with it its excellent. As far as I know the MYOB kits use very good yeasts compared to many kits who supposedly use pretty crap yeasts.

Justin was over at the brewup yesterday he loved the second wheatbeer as well, really impressd........just shows a decent kit and a lime,, kit yeast...simplicity :)

Looking forward to trying ur one.

I used a Coopers kit for this cos it was what I had at the time. And I bought the yeast a good while back with a different wheat beer recipe in mind so I just used that!

Shame we can't do a side-by-side with these!! And myself & IsMise got 2 of the MYOB wheat & mild kits each so should have a couple of different variations over the next couple of months! Just in time for summer....I heard its on a Tuesday this year.... :P
