Food grade sealant

I agree with above post, loads of these probes ( usually K type) with various types of fitting, I bought a few today on ebay from china today the SS threaded type and a smal rubber O ring same as ones in the corny keg taps and connectors this would do the job.

other idea is to use one of the probes via a small rubber grommett.
I think there is far more pollution in the common foods we consume and the toxic air we breath than in a little bit of something that may leak from a small strip of rubber or silicone in a homebrew vessel...so are we a little overbaord sometimes on food grade this and food grade that? Plastic Ballygowen water  botles are made with " one trip" plastic that is toxic when left in the sun. Everything we buy is wrapped in plastic. As far as I understand it silicone is extremely durable and does not break down easily as plastics do, so im not sure if there should be a worry about microscopic traces of silicone sealer to be honest that may leach into our beer, I would be more concerned about the plastic fermenters from homebrew shops which are not stamped as food safe like the mayonaise tubs from the chippy actually are. So maybe the plastic fermenter or mash tun is way more dangerous for our health and more likely to add undesireable flavouurs than a bit of silicone..............comments and criticism welcome!

I use these in plastic and Keg Hlt's
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/probe-of-temperature-sensor-for-water-tank-sensor-tube-for-solar-water-heater-/271187178709?ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:GB:1123
and pop my stc-sensor down it

Is there any extra wiring involved in fitting these or does the probe just sit into it?

Drill a hole in plastic bucket or keg hlt and a washer a nut screwed tight. The stc probe travels nicely down the pipe into the middle of what you are trying to measure.
I have heat transfer compound but its really not necessary and makes a hell of a mess of the probe tip

Problem with many sealants is that it's not the sealant but the pigments and critically the fungicide in them that will kill you :(

thats a good way to use the probe

Never thought of that. That's brilliant. I'm hoping to have multiple read points though. I find that the temperature from one point to another in my tun can vary about 4 deg at times. Maybe I'm just hasty taking the reading with the thermometer though. I was thinking of getting some threaded bar and drilling out the center and inserting the temp sensor. Then inserting the bar into the wall of the mash tun, same method as for attaching the tap. In saying that though, the bar would act as a cold bridge so I could end up monitering the temp very well while ruining the insulation qualities of the cooler box. Or maybe I'm just over thinking this...... ::)
