Good news for me, not so good possibly for craft beer.

I was in my local carryout last night and saw a basket of shortdated beers at 1 euro each, 23 bottles of Knockmealdown and Barefoot Bohemian, I couldn't resist as the date was BBE 04 13, and as a brewer, I ain't afraid of no stinkin BBE date.

My thoughts are that it'll put the owner off carrying some of those low turnover ranges and stop them being so enthusiastic about stocking this stuff in future as he's having to offload it cheap due to lack of take up.

there was also a lot of hobgoblin type stuff there, so not restricted to 8 degrees, I was in equal measure happy and sad :) :(

How far back along the line is the 'loss' pushed?
Is the brewery allowing a credit on these?

I would think they're paid for by the retailer, and the retailer takes the hit.

That is my thought also, I'd imagine he's covering his losses and out of profit on these, maybe even taking a small hit.

I think the answer is future sales or loss of moreso will affect the brewery.

For now the offie takes the hit.

Every time I'm in Tesco Maynooth of late it's a similar story. 8 Deg stuff is frequently discounted to €4.99 a 6 pack, and London Pride and Hobgoblin cans for €1.
Haven't been there in a few weeks but ill be in there soon lookin for those bargains!

If a LOT of beer ( say 3 or 10 kegs ) were returned as out of date the Duty and the Vat could be offset against future sales.
However for an offy with a few cases or crates its probably not worth the bother from either party.

Much better to discount and (prolly) sell at break even??
Remember: The Nationals are just round the corner - time to get brewing

The Abbots Ale House in Cork used to be great for out-of-date beer.
You'd pick up pint bottles of crazy expensive foreign beers for a euro a piece.
Not sure what they're like now...

I was speaking to the staff over the weekend, it appears the owner is heavily behind the craft beer and there is nothing to worry about with regard to his commitment.

2 weeks ago my local Chinese restaurant gave me 4 bottles of beer (regular customer and all that) until I got home and noticed that he had sliced off very neatly all 4 BB dates.

Now the question I have for you all is did I sling them or drink them?

My body is a Temple and I am very careful what I put in my mouth these days.
Of course I drank them all! but there was definitely a bad prawn in my Chinese though.
