dme for yeast starters

making a new order for ingredients. 

is it me or has dme gotten v expensive? over £7 for 1kg of dme spraymalt?

i know you're not supposed to use simple sugars in a starter, but anyone know of anything cheaper than £7 kg for use in making a starter?

An all grain starter is much cheaper. You'd probably get 5 or 6 litres of starter wort from 1 kg of pale malt.

edit: or do what tube does.

Im gona do a mini mash one of the days for starter wort & fill a load of kilner jars. Lads in the USA are autoclaving the jars of wort in a pressure cooker so it sterilizes & no need for a boil. Handy. "canning starter wort" is the term I think.
On tap: Flanders, Gose,
Fermenting: Oatmeal Brown, 200ish Fathoms,
Ageing: bretted 1890 export stout.
To brew:  2015 RIS, Kellerbier, Altbier.

ah! thx tube- i do that, but often i sparge so low that there's not any point in keeping what's left.

had never thought of a mini mash though- much much cheaper- prob better in terms of sugar too

+1 on the mini mash.

200g pale malt. Mash for 15 mins in a small pot on the cooker. Batch sparge. Boil for 15 mins and hey presto - a 1L starter.

I've never bought dme in my life.
