I suppose traditionally the brewing would have been "women's work" like baking the bread, cleaning the house, popping out wee bairns, etc...  ;D
Welcome Grainy!

There are cultures out there that traditionally, the beer brewing *was* womens work - i.e. the idea of men brewing beer there would have been about as laughable as the idea of men making pastries, cooking dinner, or getting the children fed on time  ::)

Think I read of it in Sandor Katz' The Art of Fermentation. Worth digging through that again.

Oh and Welcome Grainy  - do let on where abouts you are local to. The front page of the forum has a section on Homebrew Communities - check it out for a meetup that is local to you. The social elements and tips swapping are the best bits of homebrewing - you sample other peoples brews, and get to understand what good beer is about and why it is fun and rewarding to make.

Thanks everyone for the welcome. im based in Dublin mostly but on occasion am down in the wild west of Galway so if you could guide me to some local meetups i would appreciate..

Shanna

Hi Grainy,

For Dublin if your based around the city centre then Capital brewers would be your closest Club, they meet in Kavanaghs pub on Dorset street. South Dublin brewers (my local club) meet in the Dark horse in Blackrock.  The guys in West Dublin aka Liffey Brewers meet in Lucan arms I think and there are the North County brewers meet in the old Boro in Swords. Wicklow garden Brewers meet in pub in Bray name escapes me at the moment. Check out the club section at the bottom of the forum home page.

Oh and welcome.

I resemble that remark ;) conscious decision learned through years of writing emails. Put the new stuff first and kget somebody read the old stuff further down in in the thread.

Heh Ciderhead nice to see your treatment for the thread hijacking is working a treat.

The English term you need is "Ale Wife". She ran the brewery and the Pub. She was (and still is (Metalman?) a formidable character)

See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alewife_%28trade%29

Remember: The Nationals are just round the corner - time to get brewing

Much easier too do it this way, and people expect responses down here.
